“It’s not going to be like in the past when seals had a bounty on them and were wiped out,” King said. “As long as the federal government protects the species, the problem is not going to be solved.”

Where did Jaws take place?

The movie was based on shark attacks that occurred in New Jersey in 1916. The movie was filmed in Martha's Vineyard.

We had the odd shark move up into Maine waters from time to time- and this was 30+ years ago- and the water in boston is warmer than in Maine- Maine water is very painfully cold-

Maine is in the normal range of the white shark.
If this seal problem continues to expand to Maine you will see more white sharks there. - Tom

oh yeah no doubt- the waters are a bit warmer than they used to be 30 years ago- but still quite cold though- but if seals migrate there in numbers, sightings definitely will increase- shark sightings in Maine have been increasing slowly but surely -

Universal studios? We on the Cape all knew the shark was fake..

Native Cape Codder here. Truth is I swam in the ocean in the 70’s and 80’s. (swimming lessons in the Atlantic are chilly!) We never worried about sharks. This is a recent problem.

Yep, one up in northern Bay of Fundy right now over 15 feet/2000+ lbs ...several around Nova Scotia and one as far North as Havre-aux-Maisons ...and those are just the ones w/”sat” tags!

The town scenes were filmed in Edgartown, MA.(east side of Martha’s Vineyard) This is where you see all the white houses and picket fences.

Most of the water shark scenes were filmed on the west end of Martha’s Vineyard in and around the town of Menemsha, MA.

When they take the water ferry boat across the harbor, I believe they were going over to Chappaquiddick Island. Made famous by the swimmer Ted.

The lighthouse is at Gay Head. When the boat heads out it is the Menemsha harbor. Yep, the ferry is the Chappy ferry. Not sure which Beach they used. it could be the one between Edgartown and Oak Bluffs s there is a "pond" there under the bridge.

It is not over fishing of their food source.

It is because the government protected the north Atlantic Gray seal.
They were endangered. Now there are tens of thousands of them. The Great Whites like to eat the seals. They are all over Monomoy Island just south Chatham, MA at the elbow of Cape Cod.

Water temp is not a factor for white sharks. They have a very wide range from the 40s up to 80 deg, which is more of a range than most shark species.

That's because great white sharks have a special circulatory system common to several types of large fish. It's a countercurrent system which brings cold seawater chilled by the gills backwards in blood vessels, toward the tail. The muscular thrashing movements of the tail has warmed the blood in vessels back there, which travels forward toward the head in blood vessels which run parallel and close to those bringing the cold water toward the tail. There is a heat exchange, so that the blood is pre-warmed before it hits the tail and thus does not chill the tail muscles before their thrashing motion warms it up. This results in far greater efficiency of the tail muscles, so these large fish can propel themselves swiftly through even cold water, with full muscle efficiency.

I saw from your link how far up the Bay of Fundy that white is.

Years ago I went up there to Grand Manan Is. to give a shark talk. That shark is much father up in the Bay.

Ocearch was not allowed to tag in Cape Cod waters and is operating out of Nantucket into Federal waters, and will eventually move probably toward Maine. - Tom
