The Latin name for the newly discovered species of leech is, according to the article: Macrobdella mimicus.

I am not familiar with this type, but I am familiar with a genus that inhabits the Ottawa area: Macrobdella parliamentus, MP for short. Their bloodsucking tends to subside for several months before an election, where they promise to make the world perfect. After election time, they resume their bloodsucking activities.

I understand that there is a similar strain in the environs of DC, the Macrobdella congressus.

Bdella is the classical Greek word for "leech." So Macrobdella means it's a big leech.

Perhaps the Democrats should consider replacing the donkey as their symbol with Macrobdella mimicus.
