Report: Tate Martell a no-show at Miami’s practice Monday

This is the start of what will likely be an extended — and utterly predictable — football soap opera playing out at The U.

Instead of bringing it on and competing with Georgia transfer Justin Fields for the starting job, Tate Martell hightailed it out of Ohio State earlier this offseason and ultimately landed at Miami not long after. Granted immediate eligibility with the Hurricanes, and seen as a slight favorite to win the starting job, Martell instead saw Jarren Williams stake his claim as QB1 as Manny Diaz named the redshirt freshman the Hurricanes’ starter Monday morning.

This is what happens when a young man believes in the hype and thinks having a 5 star rating means entitlement to a starting job. I forget the guys name but there was another guy hyped as a 5 star would, back when nobody used the star ranking, who went to the U. He lost out on the starting job then transferred a couple of times until he landed at Rutgers. He disappeared into the football ether. Looks like Martell is going into the Transfer Portal again.

Jarren won the competition fair and square. Miami’s offensive coordinator, Dan Enos, came from Alabama. He had a QB competition there and he selected the better QB. I think Jarren is the right pick as The U’s starting QB.

Exactly. He initially committed to Texas A&M out of high school. On film, he looked like the next Manziel. He then did a last minute switch to Ohio State. During his recruitment to A&M he made derogatory comments about his future QB competition. A real head case.

Character counts.

And not just in politics.

He should nail down a solid job at the car wash while he has the chance.

“lost out on the starting job then transferred a couple of times until he landed at Rutgers.”

Bryan Fortay?

That is the guy. He was from New Jersey. Because he was from the NYC Metro area, his saga received a lot of airtime on the WFAN. This was odd considering the area is not a not bed for college football. Just like with Martell, Bryan came off as egotistical.

I always told my players as well as the parents, “no one is above the game.” I remember parents telling me that without their kid, we couldn’t compete. I always replied that we will make due without their kid.

Going into a championship game during a 19-1 season, with both goalies getting playing time, a parent told me if his kid didn’t start in goal then he won’t be bringing the kid to the game. Then the parent had the unmitigated gall to say to me, that if his kid didn’t start, he will move him to another program and play a higher level.

The other kid played the entire game, shutout the other team and we were league champions. To add insult to injury, two weeks after the season concluded, a family moved in from Canada and their kid became the second goalie. Then came the karma, the coach from the other kids new team called me and wanted to know what the family was like.
