Have you ever wondered whether your cat is ignoring you because it doesn't understand its name? Several researchers from Japan did, so they tried to get to the bottom of it.

And we have bad news: According to a study published in Scientific Reports, the researchers found that cats are able to distinguish their names from other random sounds.

Which clearly means that, yes, your cat is just choosing not to respond to your calls to come hang out.

The problem is the researchers were using the names not "Your Majesty".

Just about all of my cats knew their names, and I’ve had about a dozen over the years.

The furry jerks are just choosing to ignore us when we want them to come cuddle.

Maybe it’s just your cat that ignores you, CNN.

Every cat I had would come running at full attention to one sound - the can opener.

My last one always came, except maybe once but then she was getting older in her years and didn’t always feel so well.

She was so smart and nice. Love her to this day.

Or maybe the cats didn’t like the researchers. My cat does know his name and often will meow when called as a reply then come over to see what’s up.

Same here except for one cat we had in 32 years. For some reason, the cat just didn't respond to the name he was initially given. After a year and a half, we changed his name. Seemed he responded to "D" words. Picked up the new name within a week or so. Only time it has ever happened with our cats. He's 7 years old now.

I was going to say sunrise was also a good motivator for them. I used to be at work by 6:30am for many years, so their morning feed was quite early.

Now retired, sunrise is still a trigger for them. Or maybe even a few hours before. :p

I’m a cat person and have been many many years. Cat are intelligent creatures but part of their intelligence is knowing how to ignore you and not let any smarts show. Like alarm clocks once you set a cat they will figure out how to accomplish their goal each day.

I’ve never understood why anyone needs to do a study on something that is already common knowledge. By that I mean anyone that has ever been owned by a cat knows that the cat knows its name. Our cats over the years know their name and most of the time respond to it when called.

Next up, there will be a grants for a study to determine if water is wet and another to see if wood is suitable for building homes.

Which clearly means that, yes, your cat is just choosing not to respond to your calls to come hang out.

Anybody who has ever kept a cat know this. We let our charming little furball out daily to sharpen her claws, get her greens and briefly climb a tree in the front yard.

When it is time to come in the wife calls her and sometimes she comes and sometimes just climbs the tree a little higher. But let Mrs. Vigilanteman bring out the hose or the water bottle and cat races in before you can pull the trigger.

Hahaha, so true. Same with the two cats I had all those years ago. I imagine now days they will come running to the sound of pull top cans.

The problem could be that we give them names that when pronounced, do not sound like a can of tuna being opened.
