[history]
A woman in Florida got a rude awakening on Monday when she went to go check on a fire alarm and ended up in a fight for her life.
Alice Coleman said she woke up to a fire alarm going off and opened the front door of her Fort Lauderdale apartment to see what was happening. But that's when Fort Lauderdale police said 34-year-old Fitzroy Morton confronted her.

...opened the front door of her Fort Lauderdale apartment to see what was happening. But that's when Fort Lauderdale police said 34-year-old Fitzroy Morton confronted her. I always, and I mean always answer my door with either one of my 9mm or the full-sized 1911 in my hand, round in the chamber. Sure, it is discretely behind my leg but I'm ready. I'm out of the swing arc of the door, balanced and ready to step back and to the side if rushed - in order to have room to bring the pistol around and up on center mass. That would also draw an attacker across the threshold and once they are provably inside my home, advancing on me...well, that just makes what happens next perfectly legal in my state.
There's a small table beside the door that I can place the firearm on once I'm convinced there is no threat, or I can tuck it in my back pocket (one of the 9s and the 1911 have manual safeties so I'll briefly pocket carry with one in the chamber - not so the Glock).

Ill be more careful from now on when I open my door, she said Tuesday. Ill open my door with my Taser, because I have one.
I hope the next one isnt high on something that lets him power right through the taser. Maybe she ought to consider something with a little more stopping power.

This woman is a demonstration of why it is unwise to underestimate any human. He better hope the boys in the cell block don't see who got him there.

If you're that concerned, may I recommend a storm door?

It improves insulation for your door area. Steel construction makes it secure. And if somebody comes up saying he wants to give you some promotional literature, he can just slip it through the mail slot.
Also, things like the Ring Doorbell allow you to talk to people at your door with your cell phone, with full video of who's there.
