Temperatures in Houston reached 100 degrees for the first time in 2019 this week, according to data from the National Weather Service. But according to a new study, 100-degree weather could soon become a much more common forecast for Houston and cities nationwide if no action is taken to address climate change.
According to a July 2019 report from the national nonprofit The Union of Concerned Scientists, cities nationwide could see more "dangerously hot" days as early as 2036.
The report analyzed four different heat index thresholds - above 90°F, above 100°F, above 105°F and "off the charts" - to show how hot cities could get during three time periods - historical, mid century and late century. These metrics were applied to three different scenarios of climate action that include no action, slow action and rapid action.
The report found overall, the U.S. is facing "a potentially staggering expansion of dangerous heat over the coming decades." Data shows the intensity of the heat depends on how quickly action is taken to reduce climate change and heat-trapping emissions, according to the report.
"The results highlight a stark choice: We can continue on our current path, where we fail to reduce emissions and extreme heat soars," the report states. "Or we can take bold action now to dramatically reduce emissions and prevent the worst from becoming reality."

96 deg in Scottsdale right now.
A bit of Monsoon muggy but normal for this time of year.
It’s sad to think that southern Texas will no longer have an Arctic climate.
Texas polar bears are bound to go extinct.

We used to call these "weasel words."
Wrong. Fraud. The current cyclic pattern we are in, which is warm, has warmed the Arctic specifically in the winter via increased water vapor and increased in night-time low temperatures in the mid-latitudes for the same reason.
Little to no change in the tropic regions and little to no change in the daytime high temperatures.
No kidding
I live in Houston now too. This is nothing. Again More Fake News to justify Global Warming or what have you.
I guess it makes more sense to promote global warming panic when it is actually warm rather than like they usually do during the winter in a snow storm.
Hot in Houston? What is this world coming to?
I was gonna say that Houston had it’s first 100 degree day and it’s early August?
Sounds like winter is coming early this year!
I live in the Hill Country and we finally had our first 100 degree day this week....all in all, it’s been a fairly mild summer for Texas.
That's a bunch of horse hockey. I checked the drought map at noon and there wasn't a single area showing red. Mostly yellows and tans which are the top two levels. Our area is usually red. Even the lib weather folk in Austin have had to admit how cool it's been. Sure, we're going to have normal 100+ degree temps this weekend but that's the first this year. A couple weeks ago it was record shattering unheard of cool 89.
Guess that summer of 115 when I sat in front of the fridge with a wet towel back about 1978 was just my imagination. A few summers ago we had 100+ temps for 100 days. This summer is nothing. I leave the windows open until about mid afternoon when it hits 85 inside temp before turning on the a/c.
Proof on the NOT earth shattering drought conditions.

Actually, he convinced Germans to end the first experiments with transgenderism and to burn the "research" papers at the sex research institute where the surgery was being done.
The past few days have got Houston ALMOST to normal this summer. Since the beginning of summer (June 21, 2017), Houston has averaged a high temperature of 93.65 degrees. The 30-year average for the June 21 - August 8 period is 93.67 degrees.
And monkeys COULD fly out of my butt.
Yes, Houston used to be known for mild summers with low humidity - remind me again
“And monkeys COULD fly out of my butt.”
And if you COULD train them you COULD be a wealthy man.
It’s Houston in the summer. Dangerously hot days are normal.
It’s going to be hot....in Houston....in August
