Just one day before he turned 45, Colin Dowler didn't think he'd live to celebrate it...
the avid outdoorsman was scouting backcountry trails outside of Powell River, B.C., on his mountain bike, about seven kilometres away from a nearby logging camp.
After making his way down one of the hills onto the logging road, he caught sight of a large male grizzly bear, walking in his direction.
"I wasn't really sure what to do about the situation," Dowler said from his Vancouver hospital bed. "I largely stood there, and let the grizzly keep walking up towards me."
Concerned of making any sudden movements, Dowler nervously watched as the bear inched closer. He had a hiking pole in one hand and tried to nudge it away.
But the bear kept advancing and swiped at Dowler's mountain bike.
It grabbed me by the stomach and kind of pushed me down and dragged me toward the ditch maybe 50 feet," he said. "I tried eye gouging it away and it didn't really work."
Dowler, a husband and father of two daughters, says the event seemed to unfold in slow motion. He considered playing dead as the bear bit through his arm, foot and thigh.
"It sounded like it was grating my bones up," said Dowler. Knowing that the bear wouldn't stop the onslaught, he remembered he had a small buck knife in his pocket
...
I grabbed the knife out and opened it and put it in [my] hand and stabbed the bear in his neck.
...
four officers went into the area following the attack. Insp. Murray Smith said the bear was put down after it snuck behind one of the officers.

Smart. What's nuts is that some state/national parks are gun free zones.
Canadian making bear grate?
The .44 on your side is to shoot your friends leg off if you ever get attacked by a Kodiak.
They don’t need an excuse silly or otherwise.. A bear that attacks a human should be put down.
Some people are irresponsible with guns in the outdoors..being around grizzly is less dangerous overall...on the other hand you gotta pack for personal safety from bear or puma or stupid irresponsible vicious humans.
True, handgun is last resort. many argue smaller caliber and more hits, but w/o a proper long gun a handgun is rolling the dice.
I agree.
My point is the dreck conjured up to justify it.
It’s like, “stop resisting!”, yelled AUTOMATICALLY during a needless beating.
Or the new, urban, “I can’t breathe..!” yelled automatically in the attempt to complicate even reasonable efforts to stop the perp.
More and more people are getting into PR, even if unpaid.

You can't just snag a favorite picture from a desktop folder...it has to be hosted someplace on line to be posted here.
Best bet is to save the image to an image hosting service, I use Photobucket. In Firefox right click and select "Copy image location", in Safari right click and select "Open image in new tab" and copy the address in the address bar. Other browsers have similar tricks.

NICE! Thank you!! I was proud that I knew the < p > and < i > codes. Ha! N&V, what image posting service do you use?
Birds lack a capscacin receptor. I wonder if adding pepper spray or some other capscacin source to the sugar water would discourage a bear, but not affect the hummers?

I don’t. I used to use photophuckit. Then they out of the blue decided to charge everyone $300 a year for the privilege.
Haven’t gotten around to getting a new service.
Sorry, but that’s a good shoot. Once a predator gets a taste of humans, we can’t allow it to live to hunt another one.
