The researchers combined magnetic readings and radioisotope dating of samples from seven lava flow sequences to recreate the magnetic field over a span of about 70,000 years centered on the latest geomagnetic reversal.
They accurately dated the lava flows by measuring the argon produced from radioactive decay of potassium in the rocks.
They found that the final reversal was quick by geological standards, less than 4,000 years.
But it was preceded by an extended period of instability that included two excursions — temporary, partial reversals — stretching back another 18,000 years.
The lava flow data was corroborated by magnetic readings from the seafloor, which provides a more continuous but less precise source of data than lava rocks.
The scientists also used Antarctic ice cores to track the deposition of beryllium, which is produced by cosmic radiation colliding with the atmosphere.
When the magnetic field is reversing, it weakens and allows more radiation to strike the atmosphere, producing more beryllium.
Since humanity began recording the strength of the magnetic field, it has decreased in strength about 5% each century.

The field of that succka moves around too much as it is.
Uh, the magnetic field tracking is ridiculously easy to keep track of, unlike inferring temperature and atmospheric composition.
You just check rocks on the ocean floor, the iron hardens in the direction of the dominant magnetic field. They form visible stripes when you measure for it.

Stock up on water, food is a good thing to do anyway. I have chickens so they feed off the land and provide protein. Water is harvested in barrels. I live in a high earth quake area so we likely will have a major one fairly soon. The pole shift will increase the likelihood of that happening.
This is why racetracks call them “pole cars”...
I fail to see how magnetic pole shift increases earthquakes.
The danger is increased solar and cosmic radiation.
Secondary stuff would be likely increased clouds (theory - on cosmic rays), and disruption of animal behavior that are magnetically sensitive (Especially birds)
A global tax will fix everything.

Is it known that there was a full reversal? Or was it just a tilt, then the earth starts to tilt back the other way?
Right now, the North Pole points toward Polaris. 5000 years ago it was pointing toward Thuban. 5000 years from now, it will be pointing toward Alderamin.
