Mom shares cruel note left in mailbox, receives outpouring of kindness

PINSON, Ala. – Randa Ragland opened her mailbox in late July to find a letter from a neighbor, with no return address and no name.

Just words — hurtful ones.

The letter accused Ragland of not caring about her Pinson, Alabama, home.

“Your eyesore is affecting the resale value of OUR homes,” it said. “Do better!!!”

“So many things, bad things, had happened right before I got the letter,” Ragland said. “I just didn’t have the energy to be mad.”

Her husband lost his job. She received some news regarding her health, and her 3-year-old son was battling cancer. Jaxen, who has autism and is nonverbal, was diagnosed with stage 4 neuroblastoma just a few days before his third birthday.

Ragland decided to post the letter and Jaxen’s story on Facebook, asking people to “try being kind to your neighbor” and to “say hello to people.”

But she never could have imagined the kindness that came next....

“Right. Women were the glue that held a neighborhood together. It’s different now.“

They have more important things to do.

I did get the height and weight difference, but the "Southern Standard Scots-Irish" (and maybe German?) facial look for guys of a certain age seems similar to photos hereon.

Somebody ought to trademark the Southern Standard. Often you see it in other parts of the country in malls at Christmas, with a photographer to capture the Southern Standard guy in the red suit with a crying kid on his lap! It's a thing: grow out the beard in Movember and he's good to go!

This isolationism? My father hung the responsibility for that on one invention: The automatic garage door opener.

Look at all those white supremacists helping out that black family, would ya?

Because the driveby media just KNOW, White Southern Deplorables are raciss.

But seriously, those people are the real Alabamians I know and love.

Makes me angry to think about all the lies and slander pointed against them everyday by CNN, MSNBC, NYT, WP, etc.

I know, right? There's no kinder bunch of folks in the U.S. (as a general rule) than Southerners.

By the way, do you subscribe to Southern Living magazine? It is a great read every month -- houses, gardens, food, restaurants, bbq joints, cities and towns, proprietor-owned businesses, and much more are featured. A real treat is the back page, which is always a humorous essay about Southern culture by Rick Bragg. He is very fun to read, and there is usually a great illustration with his column, too.

Keeping It Real: The true soul of the South can’t be slapped on a bumper sticker
