MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — A 70-year-old man camping in a Walmart parking lot put a hot cook stove in his van, causing it to catch fire and spread to another van, burning two young sisters and killing one of them, authorities said Wednesday.

Prosecutors charged Roberto Lino Hipolito of Long Beach, California, with second-degree manslaughter and two counts of negligent fire, all felonies.

According to the complaint, Hipolito and his wife slept overnight in their van outside a Walmart in Fridley, Minnesota, a northern Minneapolis suburb. Surveillance video shows Hipolito cooking something on the stove, then putting it in the van before going into the store.

The van caught fire and spread to an adjacent van where police say two girls were alone up to an hour Tuesday morning as their mother shopped at the store.

Six-year-old Ty'rah White died Tuesday night while being treated at HCMC in Minneapolis, Anoka County Sheriff's Lt. Daniel Douglas told the Star Tribune. Her 9-year-old sister, Taraji White, remained in critical condition at HCMC on Wednesday evening, a hospital spokeswoman said.

When I worked at a local Staples when I first moved to Tampa, the Walmart next to us on Thanksgiving had about 10 RVs waiting for Black Friday... Amazing...

Prayers to the girl's family...

“You would think he’d know better than putting a hot stove inside the vehicle, apparently not.”

My sister, Airforce, spent about 10 years at various assignments in places like the Philippines. She said that natives regularly did unbelievable things that got them killed. On the base at a bank two guards were arguing over whose turn it was to carry the shotgun. The one grabbed it by the barrel and pulled. It went off blowing his guts out. They would regularly drive vehicles with people hanging outside the vehicle by holding on. Sometimes, they fell off. She believed that many people had no foresight that what they were about to do would get them killed or was even a bad idea. A group wanted to steel coper cable, so they took a pair of bolt cutters to it. Zap. Dead. So, the guy with him went back and got a pair of rubber dishwashing gloves. Zap. Dead.

What gets me...

Cook someone else’s kids in a car, you get a manslaughter charge.

Cook your own kids in a car, you get off scot free.

I won’t print the rest of what I’m thinking.

This is the closest Walmart to my house. I go there about twice a month. there are always campers out on the edge of the lot.

Sad situation.

That guy looks pretty good for 70.

Do you really think he is using his real ID?

A 6 and 9 year old remained in the car while it was on fire? Were they drugged with sleeping pills? If not, why wouldn’t they have gotten out?

True, that.

So nail his hide to the wall anyways.

Dunno what irritates me most. Friggin’ foreigner or friggin’ kalifornian. Neither demographic should be allowed to venture east of Needles.

“Seems old used up trailers are the new homeless tents. Nice thing about harsh winters is it drives the squirrels out.”

Yeh, no doubt about it. They’ve taken over a lot of State Park camping areas. Interestingly, they present themselves as retirees enjoying the “full time RV’er” lifestyle. Sadly, due to various previous life experiences it’s probably their best choice. Nevertheless, it’s now difficult for legitimate recreational campers with families to use many State Park camping facilities.

Wal-Mart’s gonna ban overnight camping in their parking lots. There goes our summer cross-country trip. I’d already mapped out all the Wal-Mart parking lots along the route. Looks like it’s KOA for us now.

We overnight at Cracker Barrel when traveling. Most of them have RV parking space, just call ahead and eat breakfast in the morning. Another good source is Harvest Camp and Hipcamp.

A lot of Walmart’s out West are banning overnight due to homeless population camping in parking lots.

6 or 9 year olds are usually bundles of energy. What was Mom doing prior to the WalMart trip ?

The van occupied by the children is part of a fleet owned by Universal Transit Services, based in Champlin. Company owner Emiru Hika said McKenzie was a driver for him until July 25 and was not supposed to be using the vehicle.

Something fishy about Mom. Add the Camp Stove guy to the mix and BOOM .

The van Mom was driving had sliding doors on both sides.

Couple of do gooders are assisting Mrs. Camp Stove. “They lost everything “... blah blah blah. Illegal invaders kill again, wake up ladies.

The other day there were ten tractor trailers parked in the lot, (not making deliveries), how long before the hookers show up ?

For a while, my nephew was a long-hauler. Said he never got much sleep as the hookers were always banging on the cab door asking him if he "wanted to party".

He even put signs on the windows saying that he was not interested. Didn't matter. Got desperate enough to put up a sign saying "Don't bother, I'm gay." Damned if he didn't have guys banging on the door.

I did a short stint as a long haul trucker. Nashville by far had the most aggressive hookers. The NPD was constantly at the truck stop due to prostitution, drugs, theft,

Hipolito remains jailed as bail was set at $100,000. Judge Dyanna Street also ordered him to surrender his passport. Hipolito is due back in court on Sept. 5.

Didn’t say what country he was from.

While Lieutenant Mork said leaving children of that age alone in a vehicle is not against the law, the Sheriff’s Office is referring the case to the county’s Child Protective Services “because the children were left in the van for quite some time,” said Sheriff’s Lt. Daniel

McKenzie’s sister and the children’s aunt, Alexis McKenzie, said the girls had been up since 4 a.m. the morning of the fire and went along with their mother to drive Terrell and the children’s grandmother to the airport for a trip to Arizona.
