I believe the overwhelming majority of NRA members are good people and responsible gun owners, but I decry the NRA's leadership and direction. I oppose its tactics. I condemn its inability to support its members, and I lament its transformation from a sportsman's organization into a shill for gun manufacturers...
I used to be proud of my NRA affiliation. It was a group that brought me together with like-minded people. I have friends and family who are still members; some were even in Indianapolis. But now I'm proud that I left, especially given the leadership meltdown we saw this weekend in Indianapolis, with scandal after scandal breaking throughout the weekend.
NRA members are not the problem. Responsible gun owners are not the problem. Most people at the annual convention are not the problem. The problem is the organization's leadership and the politicians that act at its behest.
Simply, the NRA has strayed far from its mission.
Today's NRA barely resembles the organization formed almost 150 years ago to aid marksmen with firearm training, safety and enthusiasm. Even in my youth in the 1980s and early 90safter the NRA became deeply involved in public policyat its core, the organization was still about safe, responsible gun ownership.

The NRA has fought and helped keep our 2nd Amendment rights. They have been very dedicated to the cause and very effective,
So now, when they have a problem, we should just abanfon them? This is the time when we need to support them and help them get back to the effective organization they have been for a long time.
The gun-grabbing liberals are the ones who want to get rid of the NRA.
A half truth is more evil and a out right lie. A lot of not the whole story in the points made in this article.
Author is a Fudd, who wants to ban "ugly" guns. To hell with him.
“What Scandals?” Do a little research. The NRA has several (legitimate) scandals its contending with.
I’m also disgusted with the NRA since Col. North left, and there has been so many capitulations to the Dems agenda, but I still renew my membership, even though I also belong to GOA, because the NRA has been pretty effective arguing those case before the USSC—— and I see a lot more of that on the horizon.
This is from May 1. Why post it now?
He can resign later. Right now, the NRA needs to step up.
Just keep in mind, similar complaints were on Bush 41's lips when he tore up his NRA membership card. The organization did not "stray", it adapted to an increasingly hostile environment - primarily by growing into a powerful political lobby (which does bring with it the industry's corporate money). I don't recall any other organization stepping up to deal with the threat.
People who now want the NRA to "return to its roots" are similar to the plaids and tweeds who nearly killed the organization in the 1970s, before Neal Knox's group took control.
There's plenty to criticize about the NRA's internal policies and current leadership, but there is no going back to the "old ways", no matter how appealing that may sound.
Nothing new. I remember TIME magazine back around 1968 saying the same thing, calling the NRA a GUN LOBBY, shill of the gun manufacturers (the NRA had no lobby till years later)
Gun manufacturers have their own lobby. S.A.M.M.I.
I am no longer an NRA member, but for different reasons.
I do belong to an NRA affiliate gun range and gun collectors association.
I use to love reading the NRA magazine. The NRA is not a shill for firearm manufacturers. The NRA leadership has gotten out of touch with the membership, in my opinion. I hate their constant pleas for money, even though I have not been a member for a long time.
What did it for me was their inability to work with local gun rights groups on opposing two State Initiatives. They were far more interested in fund raising for themselves that in helping defeat the initiatives.
The telltale giveaway that this is a false flag operation.
Oliver North leaving got my attention.
I don’t put much stock in rhetoric from Newsweek shills who begin flapping their jaws by announcing that they are a “veteran” hoping that it will make them more credible. It demeans my military service. Being a “veteran” does not make my opinion any more credible than any other American. This guy is no different than those “I’m a veteran, God bless you, anything will help” clowns you see standing around in Walmart parking lots. JMO. Fire away.
It’s NewsWeak.
It’s SUPPOSED to concern-troll.
It’s their job.
It’s like reading an Article penned by Benedict Arnold talking about why he left the Continental Army.
Completely correct.
Oh Jeebus.
Why not dig up dead ole Sarah Brady and have her pen an article why she's not an NRA member.
The president of the NRA was Ollie North and he claims there is some slimy business with where money goes. Im concerned as I have been a member for 40 years and a life member for 15. I payed for all my kids life memberships too.
“For decades now, NRA had to mobilize against gun prohibitions, making that a high profile imperative.”
And they’ve done a pi$$ poor job of it. You can’t dismiss their poor behavior in the face of the very real threats to our Second Amendment. The feckless pr!cks have supported RATs for Congress “because they supported the 2A” but nothing else that comports with the ideals of the NRA’s membership. The membership needs to take back control of the NRA and do it now!
Not if they don’t get rid of Wayne LaPierre.
He’s been using the NRA to finance his lavish lifestyle and done little for gun owners lately.
