You can get away with calling something "white trash" in polite company, on cable television and in the headline of a magazine article. An article in The New Republic once posed the question of whether President Trump might be "a white trash icon." For some reason, the term manages to come across as less offensive than most other racial slurs.
Yet "white trash" could be called the Swiss army knife of insults. It's deft in its ability to demean multiple groups at once: white people and people of color, poor people and people who "act" like poor people, rural folks and religious folks, and anyone without a college degree.
So why does "white trash" still get thrown around without much pushback?
Typically, the term is directed at low-income, rural white people. And while there were more than 17 million white people living in poverty as of 2016, it's still rare that you see poor white people represented in government or media. (In 2014, more than half of all members of Congress were millionaires.)
"The problem with the white trash reference is often ... it becomes an easy way to dismiss a group and to generalize," Isenberg says.
Even though exit polls have shown that white people of all class and education backgrounds voted for Trump in the general election, Isenberg says it's the people pegged as poor and working-class whites — wearing red Bubba hats and cheering at rallies — who get burdened with negative associations.
She says we talk about those white folks as "a group that doesn't deserve to be heard from, either because we don't like them because they're poor and they're violent, or we want to claim that they're the most racist group in society."

And why is it acceptable for blacks to call white men as “white boy”? But don’t you dare as a white person call any of them “black boy”, even if they are a boy such as a 10 year old.
The REAL reason that rural & “near poor” whites are called “white trash”, “hillbillies”, “country bumpkins”, “trailer park trash” & other slurs is that most such folks are PATRIOTIC, are too proud to take “government handouts” (even when they need the benefits), dislike ANTI-religious NUTS, are overwhelmingly PRO-LIFE & generally vote for CONSERVATIVE candidates.
IF you are NOT a LEFTIST, “an eater at the public trough” and/or a “racial minority group” member, the LEFTISTS simply despise you because you are “NOT in their tent”. = FASCISTS despise self-sufficient people & and anyone who disagrees, in any detail, with their LEFTIST-MORON theories/policies/notions.

When you insult someone who’s done you ZERO harm, you deserve to get your ass kicked.
Most of the “poor” folks I know are simply hard-working, decent Americans, salt of the Earth, who MAKE this Country work, every day. Just trying to pay the bills and feed their families... and they get trashed by liberal retards on a daily basis, just for being alive and expecting a piece of the American Dream.

Funny that the Prez gave a shoutout to a group of ladies sitting in the first row at his last rally who have attended all but two of his rallies. You have to have some kind of bread to do that.
Additionally, I've found the people in my West Tennessee community to be courteous and mannerly. If "working class" means supporting your family, it sounds honorable to me.

I actually go off on people who use the term white trash, hillbillies or trailer park trash. They are much more offensive than many things that can get you ostrasized in public. Like tr@nny, or f@g. Those two words are descriptive. We all know exactly what they look like in 95% of cases. OTOH, I know a lot of poorer white people, and many who live in Manufactured Homes, and who live in RV’s. They are not really poor, and some are really quite rich. They just want to maximize their retirement years or be flexible enough to travel to see grandkids...IOW, elderly.

You and I both, read post 32. I am white and I am proud of being white. I wouldn’t change my race for anything, and anyone that feels guilty is a fool. We must not allow people to denigrate us or people we know or do not know, anymore than Americans from African heritage should. We don’t need stinking laws, just don’t allow these hateful words to be spoken or used.
Things human beings cannot change, physical deformities, color, or ugly.
Things they can change, they way they act.
Criticism of actions are fair game. NOT of the first sentence, it is downright rude.
You know, I was just going to say that I'm kind of proud of where my poor hill folk family came from and where and how they ended up.
Each generation just kind of made things better for the next.
Except for one important fact: they represent not our country but opposition to it.
Because the Democrats think only poor dumb White Supremacists (AKA Irredeemable Deplorables) Voted for Trump, that’s why.

I always cringe when I hear the term “red neck” for the same reason. It is often use as an insult toward white hard working people.
when i was a kid “white trash” was what people called “wiggers” now.
