Early 80’s , I served with several sailors that hailed from Ohio, they claimed that they were given the option of joining the Navy or doing jail time.

It was a very difficult time from what I was told. Soldiers assigned to CQ duty were issued a .45 cal pistol. It wasn’t like that when I was in. We renovated some barracks in the 90s and found quite the collection of contraband behind the walls, knives, nun-chucks, bags of drugs etc.

I’m just saying a well rounded military unit needs a certain percentage of scroungers and ne’er do wells and street-smart guys and the rest of it. Somebody needs to know how to run a fork lift, run a still, or hot wire a car, and things not taught in Basic Training. When I was in Korea, during a slow weekend of extra duty a NYC native and I were working and he looks oit a wimdow and immediately zeroed in on a couple locals on base who I didn’t pay any attention to. He knew they were up to something, and he was right. Most people wouldn’t know this kind of thing. In this case it was blackmarket sale of Comissary food items (beef and pork etc).

Unless I’m transporting a pet to a Vet Appointment, or dropping off a trained dog we’ve sold or a puppy to new owners, I do NOT take them with me in the car while running errands.

Our house dogs jobs are to protect our home and farm while we are gone; they can’t do that very well from the back seat of the car now, can they? ;)

Even if your dog is in an RV and is obviously comfortable and cool (not panting, not barking, not doing anything except looking out the window, there will be a paniced person ready to call the police.

RV owners now put signs in their windows explaining to the uninformed that their dogs are just fine.

It's better to be safe than sorry, unfortunately, few people can tell a true emergency.

“It was not popular to join up in the years following Vietnam.”

I joined in 1978 when I was 17, after H.S. graduation. People thought I was nuts, but we had Carter as President, there were NO JOBS, inflation was through the roof, my folks had 22% interest on their mortgage, there were lines for gasoline, no hope and no bright future on the horizon. And I needed money for school.

My DIs were all Vietnam Vets; I learned from the BEST!

I’ve been out for 26 years, and I still miss it every day. I’m sorry you didn’t have the opportunity, too. :)

Your fine for locking a child or animal in a hot car is a broken window.

My last two years in the Navy were
the best years of my life. I’d do it
again in a heartbeat.

I went to a preview of “Backdraft” for firemen. When the firefighter smashed the windows of the Mercedes parked in front of the hydrant to attach the line you should have heard the cheering!

It’s obvious the dog in that picture is not in distress. The sign in the window is a great idea. Some people are hard of hearing and may not hear a new (quiet running) car running with its AC on so the sign is a very good idea.

I a guy was with in Viet Nam, came home early, found a strange male with his wife.

Threw him out the window, fourth floor! FATAL!!!Texas.
(Defenestration)

The Judge told him to sign up or go to jail.

Any time you glanced at him, he’d shake his head and say, “I should have taken jail!”

I will not leave a dog in my car because there is not going to be
one in my house or car.
