WASHINGTON (CBS) Philadelphia Union midfielder Alejandro Bedoya had a message for Congress on Sunday night. After scoring a goal against D.C. United, Bedoya celebrated with his teammates before running over to a field microphone to deliver a statement to Washington on national TV.
Hey Congress, do something now. End gun violence. Lets go, Bedoya said.
Bedoyas message comes as the United States is left reeling after the latest rash of mass shootings.
Twenty people were killed and dozens were injured during a mass shooting at a shopping mall in El Paso on Saturday. Prosecutors will seek the death penalty for the man suspected in the El Paso shooting and will also pursue domestic terrorism charges against the suspect.
Less than 24 hours later, nine people were killed and 16 people were injured in a mass shooting in Dayton, Ohio.
It wasnt the first time Sunday that Bedoya commented on the gun violence in Texas and Ohio.
WARNING: Tweets contain explicit language:
The 32-year-old Bedoya has U.S. national team experience. He made the U.S. National Teams 2010 preliminary World Cup roster but was cut from the final roster. Hes played for the U.S. in the 2011 and 2013 CONCACAF Gold Cup and in the 2014 FIFA World Cup.
In a statement to CBS3, the Union said:
The Philadelphia Union support Alejandro Bedoya. He is taking a stand. The events that transpired this weekend across the country are deplorable. Our hearts go out to everyone affected.
Union head coach Jim Curtin said after the game hes on Alejandros team on the Philadelphia Union and Im on Alejandros team in support of his comments on gun control.
Im on his side. Its outrageous. Things need to change in this country for sure, Curtin said, and Ill support anyone who speaks their mind and is intelligent and informed on it every time. Thats what Alejandro is. Hes passionate. He cares.
And again, its a real issue in our country now that needs to change. A lot of people will tell me now and Ale to shut up, to stick to sports and all these stupid lines that come up. But its crazy. Its crazy in our country right now and I think it needs to change as well.
Don't be surprised if Ms. Rapinoe would follow his example next time...She would grab some microphone during a game to deliver some left-wing message. At this time, USWNT is on a "Victory Tour". It played Ireland on Saturday in Pasadena.
I am sure there are some Union fans, in PA, who care about Second Amendment. Apparently, Mr. Bedoya and the team management don't care about offending those people.
I have no problem if Mr. Bedoya and his coach offered condolences to the families of those who were killed...But, calling for more gun laws during a soccer game? I do not like that.
I followed MLS closely when David Beckham and Landon Donovan played for L.A. Galaxy...Since they retired, I lost interest in MLS for most part. I rarely watch MLS games at this time.
Congress cannot “end gun violence”. How is that intelligent and informed?
It’s like 5 year old: “stop it, now!”
That’s a positive side to this story; nobody heard his virtue-signaling message anyway...
That’s an excellent idea. Expedited arrest to trial to appeals to execution or acquittal for all gun murders in a grand total of 3 years. We just need Congress to authorize and fund this. Also, a constitutional amendment specifying that there is no minimum age for capital punishment in cases where the accused carried out a mass shooting, defined as anything over 1 death in a single incident within a single day.
Alejandro Bedoya should educate himself before he opens his pie hole. Pocket constitutions are cheap and fairly easy to comprehend.
Who the heck is this guy and who cares what he thinks?
And, they're available in Spanish.
What does Colin Kaepernick think?
What does Colin Kaepernick think?
This ahole is of Colombian descent.
The murder rate per 100,000 residents in Colombia is 7 times that of the USA.
Fix Chiraq first and then we might could talk.
I wasn’t sure about that.
I would ask, what the heck is that, but considering the subject matter I don't think I gave a hoot....
Congress can’t even stop illegal alien toddlers from entering the United States illegally and this jackass wants the Fools on The Hill to do something about “gun violence.” Sounds like somebody been hittin’ da happy smoke. LOL.
I don’t even waste my time watching soccer why should I listen to an idiot who plays it preaching about “gun violence?” Take a hike, pal.
It’s like some people have nothing between their heads and no understanding of the reason we’re armed in the first place.
If you want to give into tyranny, there’s plenty of countries out there, choose one.
Colin doesn't think. He has too much hair to spare any nutrients for brain function.
This guy could have set himself on fire. No one would notice.
Sigh, nobody cares about all of Chicago’s gun deaths
Shut up and kick yer ball.
