I just downloaded and started using Brave. All I've done is make it the default browser and import bookmarks from Chrome. Are there any other settings I should know about or addons to make it run better? In their addons they recommended Microsoft Edge but since I've never used it before I don't see why I would be using it now. Should I add that on for some reason?
I am also using AdGuard 7.0, which I installed before Brave. Is the built in ad blocker for Brave good enough to make AdGuard redundant? I've never had any problems with Chrome but I want to get away from Google as much as I can. I have DuckDuckGo as my default search engine and I'm hoping this is a worthy replacement.
Brave is basically Google Chrome in a slightly different set of clothes. So if you switched to Brave to escape Google, you really didn’t get very far.
It certainly isn’t as annoying as Firefox has become.

I think you are correct about that. A browser is not a search engine, it is an interface to a search engine. Although there are a lot of security and ad/spam issues that the browser can control, the search engine is what counts for me.
When you do search, you get suggestions and links that Google wants you to see. I personally no longer trust Google for that function. There is way too much political bias in their search engine. So much so that the search results are very often unreliable.
So show me a better search engine with an independent database that is free of bias with depth and speed competitive with Google.
After it installs it goes to a settings page. I guess it’s trying to set a default browser but the default isn’t on Brave it’s on Microsoft Edge, maybe because I am using Windows 10. I had to do a search to see what Edge even was. I thought Microsoft’s browser was called Internet Explorer.
I switched to Brave because it claims to not track you like Chrome does.
My default search, using Brave, is Bing. You can set any engine you want.
I was using Chrome before Brave; bookmarks imported flawlessly.
Brave is built on the open source chromium system. That is why it is similar to Chrome. But built by different people.
I tried installing brave 2 or 3 times, never worked at all, locked up my machine every time I tried to turn it on the first time.
Finally gave up. Last time I tried I completely uninstalled and deleted the download, started over from scratch, still wouldn’t work but I had about 8 instances of Brave showing up in Task Manager. Bogged the machine down to where I thought I was going to have to reboot.
First couple of tries, I figured I just got a corrupted download, which is why I completely removed everything and started over with new download.
Hmmmm......like Brave, but two problems:
1. It DID NOT import all my bookmarks from Chrome and missed most of them that I use a lot - have to re-open Chrome to get to those bookmarks;
2. Brave seems to block a lot of graphics/pics on the web for some reason. They show up in Chrome, but not in Brave.
I use Brave. My experience is mostly positive. Sometime I have to fall back to Firefox because some website is not working, but these incidents are few and far between.
I’d like to see it added to the various standard Linux repositories. Would make updates cleaner.
All of my Chrome bookmarks came right over, except for the ones that showed up on my home page.
Do you know if it has a translate feature anywhere?
I actually love that Brave blocks most everything being funneled at me to manipulate me.
You can export your bookmarks folder from Chrome and import it into Brave. I don’t have instructions handy, but a web search will get you the info on how to access that folder.
I use brave, cyberghost vpn and noticed that when running a computer cleaning program that it may be piggybacking or maybe because the computer might be logged into google/have google and MS it is still picking up in google some information.
I would suggest you get a new computer, new email address, not install google chrome or use the this computer for anything except surfing - if you bank, shop or cross check that email address on a system that has everything else like chrome you might still get traced even on a vpn. Just a precaution and theory.
This is the problem I had. I used Brave when I was still on Win 7. But even though they have a linux version, it did a whole bunch of no good to my linux and caused persistent warnings to my updater that eventually shut the updater down altogether. I contacted them about repairing these issues with their linux version but they seem to not care.
They need to either not offer this version or fix it, because it caused me hours of chasing down files to delete them all. And there are still settings it changed causing me problems and it looks like I will have to completely start from scratch and reload my linux to get rid of all the damage it did.
And before anyone blames linux... No, it is the Brave download. It has been the only time I have ever had an issue with any software downloads.
I tried Brave and SlimJet side by side. I like SlimJet better.
Good to know. I may try it out in a VM and check out the before/after status. If I can come up with a good uninstall routine, I might make it a part of mydesktop build.
