While doing some work outside I got to thinking. I've had a S&W 40 (since '93) for a long long time. Got my CCP a few months after moving here (Texas) back on '06. So I'm thinking, I walk the mall 5 days a week. Got to do something physical so I can watch all the TV I want. Maybe, maybe I might think about carrying considering current events. First of all, how would one carry an S&W 40 concealed??? Some kind of a fanny pack or what? Thought I might ask here.
But then I thought,,,,,,,,,,,,, I may have been born at night,,, but not last night. In spite of intentions, if one were to pull out a weapon and head for the sound of shots guess who authorities would shoot/kill first? In spite of the best intentions. Think I'll think a bit longer on the thought!!!!
In a mall you could carry in a shoulder holster covered by a light jacket.
I would like to carry something light but deadly.
Don’t go looking for trouble.
Fanny pack would work, but probably not ideal. What kind of clothing to you wear while walking the mall. Are there any 30.06 signs there?

That has happened in the past. I wouild take the position that my CCW is for the protection of me and my loved ones. While like you, there is a desire to intervene, there are serious risks in doing so, and one of them is having the idiot cops kill you because they haven’t sized up the situation correctly.
Unfortunately, the only place I frequent where I can carry is our new second home in Northern Nevada. In Douglas County lots of people carry so there’s really little likelihood of someone trying something with a firearm.
A fanny pack works and I wouldn’t give much thought to being confused for a bad guy. The overwhelming percentage of exchanges are over in seconds, before the police arrive. I would holster my weapon as soon as possible, tho.
I just gave my Son-in-Law a Star .40 cal. They live in Oklahoma and in just a few months he will be able to carry concealed.
It was not my choice tho. Compact but heavy. Only 7 or 6 shots. I gave him two spare mags which are extremely hard to find for that gun.
He is a big powerful guy who will carry it with no problem. I suggested something else but not sure he would but it.
Well they didn’t head towards any shots because the piece of garbage managed to leave. They only picked him up later as he was driving away. Listen to where the shots are coming from, move in, take cover, rinse, repeat, blast the mofo when he reloads or he has his back to you. Something that astounded me watching the video of the Mosque shooter in New Zealand was how long it took him to reload, fumbling and stuff. Anyone there who had a gun could have blown him to kingdom come even if they missed a few shots. But instead he reloaded and shot more, reloaded again shot more, on and on and on. He then gets in his car and incredibly starts shooting people on the street through his windshield, no cops anywhere, nobody shoots back. A complete fish in a barrel scenario. The only person armed is the killer.
Shorts and a light shirt. But again the question,,,,,,,,, what would/could one do in a situation?
Always have a dog on a leash. The cops will shoot him first and you might survive.

My soon to be 13 years old Golden Doodle is as much a member of my family as any of the two-legged members. I’d just as soon shoot someone who threatens her as either my wife, my kids, or my grandkids, including any cop who decides she’s a “threat.” There is a special place in Hell for cops who shoot dogs, and I am “all-in” to send them there if they try to harm my dog!
Where is the /sarc? I’m a dog lover!
Carrying a concealed handgun is not meant to “run to the action”. It’s meant as a means of defense when there is no other recourse and you or your loved-one is in eminent danger of death or great bodily harm.
The police don’t need or want civilians rushing to a scene with guns blazing. That will most likely get you killed.
The idea is that if you are armed you are not a sheep waiting for the predator to decide your fate. You have some say in the matter.
I practice with all of my firearms constantly. So I know that I can shoot well and that my firearms are in top condition. And I know the laws regarding firearms and their use for my state.
I am always armed in public. And I try to maintain situational awareness in every public place.
My intention is to never be a hero. It is to not be a victim.
Carrying a full size S&W .40 concealed would not be my first choice. However, it can be done but it might be a tad more difficult in warmer climates. A good quality IWB holster/gun belt with an untucked t-shirt over the top would probably do it.
More than just carry is involved here. The wife & I both carry but we also spend a lot of time at the range to maintain muscle memory and keep our “eye”. We’ve even shot combat pistol stages to get the adrenaline flowing in a tight situation.
However, no scenario will ever be the same. Most likely the perp is gonna stake out and pick a “gun free” zone and at a time when no “authorities” are close by. They’re basically outright cowards and losers. It will all happen within seconds while it will usually take “authorities” several minutes to arrive on the scene. IF you should happen to be the fortunate one to take one these zombies out, make sure they’re dead. You’ll want to be totally unarmed with hands up immediately afterwards. Especially when the LEOs arrive, because they’re gonna be on an adrenaline high, armed to the teeth and probably gonna shoot anyone with an exposed gun. Say nothing to anybody afterwards, especially LEOs, until you talk to an attorney. Be prepared for your life to change in many ways....don’t ask me how I know.
For many years I carried pre series 70 Colt 1911 in a Bucheimer shoulder holster cocked and locked. It was easy to carry and did not print very much.
I was embarrassed once when a hardcore criminal I was visiting, asked me what I was carrying. I told him and he said his doberman would get me before I could get it out.
I told him I was not about to try. Still I don’t think most people ever noticed.
I carry either of 2 Kimber 5” 1911 .45cal ACPs, on my R/S, with a 2 mag Galco holder on my L/S, workshirt out for concealment. It prints slightly, but no problem.
Your first responsibility is to your family not strangers at the mall. Run away from violence not towards it.
