A woman was dead after a bluff collapsed at Grandview Surf Beach in Encinitas Friday afternoon, authorities said.
Discarded beach chairs and sun hats could be seen near the portion of cliff that officials say sloughed off around 3 p.m. beneath a staircase giving access from the 1700 block of Neptune Avenue.
In addition to the fatality, four others were hurt. Two people were in critical condition, one of whom had to be airlifted for treatment, according to Encinitas Fire Chief Mike Stein.
Another two people suffered minor injuries. One of them was treated and released at the scene, while the other was taken to a hospital...

Some years ago I saw a feature story on a house in a real estate web site. The “house” was on a cliff near Otter Rock, Oregon. When I say the “house” was on a cliff, I actually mean the “house” was in the cliff.
The entrance was at the top, and the “house” was built into the cliff on three levels below. Granted the cliff was probably one of the stable sort, I would not want to live in a “house” which might fall into the ocean at the next major earthquake.
Are you sure?
Rocks do fall
earth moves
Climates do change
Time does go in one direction
The earth is ageing and will die someday
So tragic like the mudslide near Santa barbara , where the husband went out to get ice cream and when he returned the house was gone , along with his wife and kids, the firemen found him digging with his hands worn to the bone and bloody
I'm basically a risk-averse person - by my own estimation and several professional assessments. However, I do ride a motorcycle, fly acrobatics in an experimental aircraft, etc. I don't take needless/senseless risks. The rewards for the actions I take are worth the risks by my estimation. Fooling around near unstable cliffs is not a risk I would take.
Very sorry for the loss of life and injuries. Hopefully this will serve to educate people regarding the dangers these land features present.
We went to Wildwood crest beach in New Jersey every single day were back visiting my parents in Cape May
the beach on the East Coast is all together 100% more pleasant than the beach on the West Coast
the ocean is not only 20° warmer but she have these beautiful Sand dunes and then you walked out on this very flat beach hundreds of yards to the actual ocean which is also warm
its a much more pleasant experience
Amid all the beauty along the Pacific Coast is danger, both from unstable cliffs and, further north, strong currents from river outflow that can capsize even big yachts.
People who build on top of cliffs had better carry heavy-duty insurance.
Heavy rains following brush fires along the coast often cause more property damage than the fires themselves. Mudslides can make a mess of a home in their path, and sometimes they'll take it for a downhill ride toward the ocean. Pacific Palisades comes to mind.
The '60s movie, "Don't Make Waves," with Tony Curtis and Claudia Cardinale, has a somewhat realistic side plot (a distraction from the girls in bikinis on the beach?) of a beautiful home in Malibu sliding toward the ocean during a big rainstorm with some of the movie's characters still inside yucking it up.
Neither the special effects nor Sharon Tate's movie debut could get the picture an Oscar nomination, though.
Indeed. Terrible.
RIP.
Hi so just to be clear. This was purely an act of nature and not government or infrastructural negligence, correct? I only ask because I know the CA wildfires were exacerbated by the fact that the state had neglected to allow controlled burning to satisfy environmentalists. Or something...
Also I read that on coves where million dollar homes sit they are fortified with concrete walls?
Just read that three people died. Very tragic. RIP.
