Back in the day, a group of Northwest Airlines pilots were seen drinking like fish in a Moorhead, Minnesota bar before taking off on a flight to Minneapolis from neighboring Fargo, ND. They were detained before the plane got down the runway.

About the same time, a FedEx pilot catching a deadhead back brought his own booze on board and, once in the air, started attacking the actual pilot with a hammer before the co-pilot subdued him.

The joke was the difference between a Northwest Airlines pilot and a FedEx pilot was that the NWA pilot got hammered BEFORE take-off.
