... The driver of the van told CBS2s Lisa Rozner he feels horrible.
It is AGAINST the law to open a car door into the path of a cyclist. Our lives are in each others hands. We must act like it, Mayor Bill de Blasio wrote on Twitter. Rising cyclist fatalities are a crisis. We will do everything in our power to stop them.
Pay attention. Drivers must pay attention to make sure that they will be able to see there is not a cyclist coming, said Assemblyman Felix Ortiz, who lives a block away from the scene of the accident.
Its scary just to think about the possibility that my life is on the line every time I bike ride just to go to work, cyclist Miguel Gomez said. Ive been doored plenty of times. Ive been doored, like, four times. Luckily, I dont ride that fast just because I want to be safe, but yeah, its a scary thing. It happens all the time.

We need common sense car door control.
We need bicycle control. At least a 3 day waiting period and background checks at a minimum.
Bicycle ride in the opposing lane and F the cops.
Cops are getting you killed.
It's true, there are plenty of clueless, dangerous cyclists.
When you ride a bike in traffic, you soon learn that there are also plenty of terrible drivers.
I was riding in a bike lane, headed across an intersection. It was not dark. To my left was a woman driver who had stopped at a stop sign. I had the right of way -- no stop sign. I looked directly at her from about 20 feet away, She faced my direction, and I would have sworn that we made eye contact. I rode in front of her car, and she accelerated right into me. The bike and I both wound up with some scratches, but luckily that was all. She never noticed me until she hit me.
After that, I stopped riding in front of cars. Whatever I had to do to get behind them, I did. Long before that, I realized that when I was passing parked cars, I had to stay well outside the range of their doors. When I could not do that safely, I just dismounted and walked.
It's reasonable to ask drivers to be more aware of cyclists, but it is not reasonable to expect that they will do it. As Andy Grove once said, "Only the paranoid survive."
Ha ha. Well, in the years that I was there, only two communities out of the twenty something were famously gay. Of course there were gay people everywhere here and there. It may have changed.
I refuse to go back. Because it is not what it used to be before there were telephones, televisions, iPhones everywhere. The little shop near my house was renting movies the last I heard. No no no. Our idea of entertainment was to gather at one group’s house and sit around on the chairs or the floor and tell stories and encourage the storytellers.
Well put; paranoia has served me well.
I’ve been on both sides of the issue, and both groups have plenty of members who truly lack situational awareness...
