You get it. I am not ashamed that I am from the USA. I am proud. But foreign travel at its best means blending in for the local experience, which is nearly impossible on a cruise or guided tour. The ugly American equates with Eurotrash/Eurosnots (”We don’t tip in the USA because we don’t tip in Germany”). Don’t be one of those.

LOL. I hate Disney World. Hate it, hate it, hate it. But I endured for the love of my wife and children. As a an expecting grandfather, I suppose I will have to go there again. Ugh!

I’m probably younger than you are, lol. Please, go to Italy and wear silly headgear and stupid t-shirts. The Italians are used to idiotic tourists.

Viví en España por tres anos mucho años pasado.

Translation: I lived in Spain for three years many years ago.

My dad was stationed in Spain in the Air force when I was a kid. We traveled throughout Spain, Britain, Greece, Europe and North Africa when I was there.

My family learned to blend in to the local cultures and not to standout. We learned a lot more about the different cultures that way and were readily accepted into peoples homes and lives.

Beside learning to speak Spanish, we learned not to be the Ugly Americans that left a negative impression about Americans with the locals.

It also made me learn to love the United States and how special we had it here compared to the rest of the world. Many people today do not understand or appreciate that part of being Americans.

One of the most rewarding and profound memories of my entire life.

(Smile) you remind me of what I saw at my polling place November 2016. Deep blue commie precinct but with a few good people.

I lived there 20 years ago and not only could you pick out the Americans you could pick out which coast they were from. Back then Amis were the only men over 35 wearing athletic shoes. Also for sure the only with golf style pants in bright colors (east coast). Nowadays though, Lots of older European men wear athletic style shoes especially for comfort while traveling.

in california colleges, back in the day, new arrival east coast girls were the ones wearing conservative, dark colored dresses (no plunging necklines, low hemlines), bras (always) and overcoats. oh, and the MTM hairdos. every. single. time.

If you have the time, take a train (high speed Frecciarossa) to Bologna and/or Verona. Both have beautiful, compact historic centers, great architecture, wonderful food, and unlike Venice, Florence, PIsa, and Rome, relatively few tourists.
