After some thought on the generation gap appearing in today's society, I have decided to reach out to some of you to get a wider dialogue. Here are some basics about me:
- 24 years old (been a Free Republic member since 2014)
- served in the regular Army for five years (Arabic linguist), I've been out for a year
- one more semester of a bachelors' degree in international relations, plan to attend grad school for linguistics in spring, have a few computer science online certificates
- working for now as a rent-a-cop for $12/hr part-time, I live with my father
- I'd like to do some linguistics-related work, interested in Middle Eastern and Caucasian languages specifically. I may want to get into a consultancy role related to data science
- I'd describe myself as a right-leaning nationalist, and not as much a libertarian anymore. Socially, I am more on the conservative side

I can’t say as I disagree with a thing you’ve said.
Well, maybe with the exception that upon further thought, having a job/career means some exchange of freedom in the pursuit of a good salary. Hopefully it’s worth it. :)
But seriously, I agree that the trend overall is to shackle us into an ever tightening grip. For now, the shackles may be velvet, but sooner or later (the few decades you mention) the velvet will wear off, leaving the hard iron underneath.
Things will get hard. If/when America goes the way of Venezuela, it won’t be pretty.
Hopefully that won’t happen anytime soon.
As to your advice, I appreciate it, and honestly, it’s one that applies to my life. Wish I’d figured it out sooner. Often it does seem that our biggest problems are the ones we create for ourselves.
In the meantime, the only other question I could think of is do you like scifi? Have you read Heinlein, or Jack Vance? Or maybe James Schmitz??? They all have some interesting stories with some (often very) interesting observations on the human experience. If you’re into that sort of thing, you might find them enjoyable. Or not.
(Note, you don’t really have to answer that, it’s more of a suggestion disguised as a question...)
Other than that, as others have said, thank you for your service, and the very best of luck and life to you in the future. Let’s hope that it turns out better than we think.
And I guess that’s the other thing in the end. That is, after all is said and done, I think that it is better to live life for the best, and deal with the occasional slings and arrows than to constantly live under a cloud of impending doom. There are too many chicken littles in the world, and I’ve probably been a bit of one here.

Hmm. Didn’t see this when I was just writing. This is a bit more clearly thought out than my muddled mess. Yes, exactly - think and see clearly, and don’t let the ‘man’ box you in with his technology and trickery. Live your best life, don’t settle for less, and enjoy the life that God has given you.
Grab all the freedom you can and enjoy it while the getting is good. :)

Mass indoctrination will switch modes if Trumps momentum is gained upon.
Probably. The problem is that he is not zealously supported by people my age the way he was in 2016. We liked him as a chaos candidate, someone who gave the finger we didn’t have the power to do. I don’t know if he has the wherewithal to deal with the peculiarities of our situation.
2020 is quite important because the ball is in the Democrats’ court now. I honestly hope the Dems can find a modicum of reason on choosing a candidate so we can have a halfway decent discussion about the future of our country instead of the lampoon of one from four years ago. If not, the next four years will be an even bumpier ride. I do agree that something needs to be done about income inequality; it’s the symptom of a sick society.
Libs won’t be blown completely the **** out, no matter how well Trump does. The mechanism for militancy on their side has not been fully used.
Also a youngest of five Boomer here, on the cusp into Gen X. I definitely was culturally skewed older by my siblings, but I still seem to have about 15-20% of the Gen Xers’ sensibility mixed in.

I’m with your comments in general, except the idea that previous generations owe us. They clearly have developed a wealthy environment that we came into and have enjoyed. Yes, we need to deal with massive governmental/elite criminality and corruption, but that has probably been the challenge of the world for millennia. It is up to us to defeat that which is in front of us.

I wouldn’t say that they OWE us (if I indicated that in a previous post I apologize), but I would say they have blame in part for the problems we face. Perhaps those who squander their children’s inheritance on motorcycles and trinkets I have heard so much about from many of my peers do owe their children something
