The Toronto Rapors won an NBA title this June by limiting Kawhi Leonard’s games and minutes coming off an injury-filled 2017-18 season. Deemed “load management,” resting Leonard during the regular season allowed him to dominate in the postseason.
The NFL is a copycat league, and perhaps teams will try to borrow from the NBA champs to win a title of their own.
The term “load management” came to mind when Los Angeles Rams running back Todd Gurley told reporters on Sunday that he will follow a “veteran plan” to maintain his health this season.

The days of the “feature back” are over. Most teams rotate several running backs throughout the game to get more production out of them over the long run rather than have one back take the pounding every game, only to be too damaged to play after four or five years in the league. Very few running backs have the luck and durability to be the next Walter Payton or Emmitt Smith.

Seahawk Hall of Famer Walter Jones, one of the best tackles in NFL history, regularly skipped training camp for at least the last half of his 12-year career by holding out.
It wasn’t a real holdout, he just didn’t like going to training camp. Seahawk management really didn’t care because he did what he needed to do on his own to get ready for the season.
He only had 9 holding penalties in 12 years. 6 All-Pro seasons and 9 Pro-Bowl seasons. I think he skipped most of the Pro Bowl games because he didn’t want to be bothered with them. He was the best; he knew it, and so did everyone else.
