In June, thousands of dockworkers marched at the Port of Los Angeles against the coming introduction of robotic machines threatening their jobs. And they are not alone in fearing automation. According to a recent Pew Research survey, a staggering 85% of Americans support policies to restrict the rise of robots. We even have a presidential candidate in Andrew Yang running to protect jobs from automation. Economists tend to dismiss anti-technology sentiment as backwards and Luddite. But they miss an important point. As I argue in my new book, The Technology Trap, The Luddites, who smashed machinery during the Industrial Revolution, were right to fight back. Much like today's factory workers, they weren't going to benefit from new technology.

Yes! We need more plumbers and trade jobs as opposed to majors in “wymyn’s studies” and the perpetually aggrieved.
Any change is always a rough ride.
Love it.
New tagline...
And fixing the curly quotes...
There is no more pampered loathsome group of lazy slobs than dock workers. I may offend a few here but tough. Replace them with machines.
I hope America as a nation wakes up from its globalist nightmare (and leftwing indoctrination), but I don’t see this permanently lasting (Trump’s policies). Eventually, another politician will replace him and we will continue the march towards a one-world order. The problems of the world are spilling over the border and the cultural rot is too deep in America. Culture trumps law pretty every time. I would love to be wrong.
Gee, offshoring to the 3rd killed more jobs and small towns across the red state America than robotics will ever destroy. Those jobs didn’t “disappear” the were shipped out. If that totally socio-economic destructive process didn’t cause a revolt then nothing will I guess. This is a BIG NOTHING BURGER.
Correct.
You mean by tooooooo expensive is it takes away 1/2 cent/dollar of profit?
“I hope America as a nation wakes up from its globalist nightmare (and leftwing indoctrination), but I dont see this permanently lasting (Trumps policies).”
The one applause I can grant AOC and “The Squad” is every time they open their mouths, they frighten more people away from the Left. Never has their been so many clueless spokesmen for a cause. The present globalist reversal and loses is the first I have seen in my 65 years. The transformation of the courts will help considerably. Hopefully, if conservatives take Congress while Trump is in office we can get laws protecting bakers and crotch-waxers (the woman who lost her business because she wouldn’t wax a man’s genitals.) from the lawfare conducted by liberals.
If the voters can stretch the Trump phenomenon into 16 years, we have a chance to regain a free society where standup comedy is funny again and people won’t be fired over something they said twenty years ago.
There is only so many plumbing and trade jobs needed. Soon that will be flooded with labor too.
Those jobs are harder to outsource though-too few Americans want to do them, being messy and unglamorous. Of course we also need more Chemistry and Engineering majors and to cut H1-B visas to ZERO.
The HOR just passed a 300,000 h-1B bill. So that too is going in the wrong direction! BTW the Indian government thanked our HOR for their generous action on H-1b.
Fast food - robots
Ag - robots
Truck driving - robots
Construction - robots
That’s exaaaactly what we have illegal aliens for, now.
If they’re ALREADY heavily over-taxing state resources now, how will it be when all their jobs are robots?
They will nearly all be on welfare, some of them several times over.
In Calif you could have 30% unemployment, maybe 50% or more.
The really important thing is the wall, and then to start kicking the illegals out.
If we allow those who will not, or can not learn, to control the pace of technological evolution, we would still be walking everywhere and witch doctors would be our masters.
A fully automated company does not have to conform to the insane hiring practices that are required by insane rat law, the color of the skin, the hair styles, turbine, shmattas, rag heads, earrings , facial tattoos, and body piercings, transgenders, gay lesbian showcase adults, inexperienced arrogant black women. What a relief!
I think you are correct but that is not the reason I am replying. I read your post as Universal Bacon Income.
It’s before breakfast here:)
Big mistake, I know. We need to pressure Trump to fight it.
Yes. 1/2¢ per dollar is $5,000.00 of free money for every $1,000,000.00 in sales.
About 30 years ago American Airlines made a startling discovery. They determined that eliminating one olive from each passengers salad plate would reduce costs by $40,000.
