Rutger Hauer, the versatile Dutch leading man of the 70s who went on star in the 1982 Blade Runner as Roy Batty, died July 19 at his home in the Netherlands after a short illness. He was 75.
Hauers agent, Steve Kenis, confirmed the news and said that Hauers funeral was held Wednesday.
His most cherished performance came in a film that was a resounding flop on its original release. In 1982, he portrayed the murderous yet soulful Roy Batty, leader of a gang of outlaw replicants, opposite Harrison Ford in Ridley Scotts sci-fi noir opus Blade Runner. Always an imposing presence in a movie.
Rest in peace Sir.
In the very front rank of actors.
He also guest-starred in the Sci Fi TV series Lexx (first season, third episode), one of most radically imaginative science fiction series ever aired.
Hobo With a Shotgun is one of my favorites. That one and Strange Brew among my guilty pleasures.

Hauer was the better bad guy, a jewel thief whose best friend was diddling Hauers fiance (Joan Chen).
The cheating pair turn him into the police not knowing he had hidden the jewels from their latest heist.
In prison each inmate is called by a color instead of name. Hauer is magenta and Rodgers is teal I believe.
Each prisoner is wedlocked to another by an exploding collar that blows the head off both if they are separated by more than 100 feet (yards?).
No prisoner is supposed to know who their wedlock partner is. Hauer finds out Rodgers is his wedlock partner and they plan their escape.

Yes it was.
Most of the escaped prisoners were recaptured or killed but enough, about 50, escaped to be an embarrassment. The Germans closed the camp, bulldozed the ground and planted the area with pine trees.
“You should see what I’ve seen with your eyes, Chu”.
