Noooooooo! Awesome actor - unlike 99.999999% of his peers.
Saw him last in True Blood. He looked about 90. I'm always moved by the scene in Bladerunner when he is crushing the head of his maker and you don't see the gore, but only Roy's face as it transitions from rage, to horror, to despair as he realizes it doesn't make a difference, he's still going to die.
Like tears in the rain...RIP Rutger. You were one Dutch hottie!

Other than Blade Runner, I think I first remember seeing him in something called “The Hitcher” or “The Hitchhiker”, back in the early 80s.
One of the kids from “Red Dawn” was in it with him.

Also in the early ‘80s he did “Nighthawks”, which just came up a smidge short in being an outright classic (also with Sylvester Stallone & Billy Dee Williams) and “The Osterman Weekend”, which was Sam Peckinpah’s final film as director.

The Hitcher, with C. Thomas Howell. FUN, FUN FLICK!!!
The Hitchhiker was an 80s HBO show, also excellent!

Classic dialogue from The Hitcher. Loved Hauer’s character in this. So creepy.
John Ryder (Hauer) : That guy back there, the one we just passed. The guy who picked me up before you did.
Jim Halsey : That was him in there?
John Ryder : Sure it was. He couldn’t have walked very far.
Jim Halsey : Why’s that?
John Ryder : Because I cut off his legs... and his arms... and his head... and I’m going to do the same to you.
Jim Halsey : What do you want?
John Ryder : I want you to stop me.

I once read he ad-libbed that timeless line.

The only role of his that disappointed me was as star of Wanted: Dead or Alive.
It was a cheap ploy to play off Steve McQueen, and Hauer seemed miscast to me.

Aw, man...
In his best roles he was great. In every role he tried to find a way to make it stand out.
RIP.

yes, that’s the one. Howell was one of the kids from the original “Red Dawn”.
Wow, come to think of it, Charlie Sheen was in Red Dawn too.
Seems like forever ago.
