You are correct. The people in his corner could have thrown in the towel at any time but they prefer to see the fighter agree, or at least not disagree.
A recent more famous example would be the McGregor- Mayweather debacle. McGregor was getting the crap beat out of him and the referee stopped the fight. Afterwards McGregor complained that he had been in worse situations and come back to win. So you have to walk a fine line. In this case they screwed up.

And BORING

At least to an ex boxer.

But I know my sport has seen it’s best days behind it.

You never know what can happen when you get in the ring

I stopped after the headaches started getting constant.

Still LOVED doing it and still loved the sport.

George Foreman and others are fine, while others are a mess later on.

It is very unpredictable.

I used to follow it. All the way back to the days of St. Nick’s Arena, Sunnyside Gardens, the Ridgewood Grove and of course, MSG. I was too young to get in, but on rare occassions the family would be at some friend’s house who had a TV and I would watch. Otherwise, I would “watch” through the eyes of Don Dunphy on a table radio...under the covers....with the volume so low that I could barely hear him over the 60 cycle hum.
Those were the days of Pender, Fulmer, Benny “the Kid”, Basilio, Carlos Ortiz, Patterson, Moore and so many others...both greats and tomato cans.
I gave up on the sport when ABC staged that phony “tournament” where Scott LeDoux ended up knocking Cosell’s toupee off. I’d watch the big fights, but I just didn’t have the interest I did when I was younger.

Wow.

That’s back a ways.

I got into it in my mid teens in the early to mid 80s

Me and the guys would always watch the big fight before going out clubbing
