Even if you are in a car you are not safe. A bison can easily flip a car. It can get up to 30 miles per hour very quickly. And its horns and very strong neck muscles are its main weapon. Nobody should be this close to a bison. In fact I am not sure how close you can safely get. Ranchers who raise bison are injured all the time.

that bison is taking less than 15 steps to get to them, and that’s with them running the other way. They had to be closer than 30 ft, when the park requires 75 ft, minimum.

I have a acquaintance that worked for a while at Yellowstone as a host of some sort with a kind of Ranger responsibility. Not sure what all that entails or what his actual "title" was, but he interacted with many of the tourists.

He relates that the most questions about the Bison arise from the Asian tourists.

The most common being along the lines of "Who has trained them?".

The second being: "Can we take pictures with them and pet them?".

At least they ask...European tourists, as in Germans, Italians, English, etc...simply walk right up to the wildlife and expect complete submission and cooperation with their petting and selfie efforts.

American tourists simply crowd them en masse, silently and invade the hell out of the wildlife's space, provoking confrontations, then looking all wondrous and innocent with a "Why did that happen?" attitude.

Stupidity?...yeah, a lot of it...ignorance?...most definitely and especially on the part of the American tourists.

They think for the most part that the animals were staged there in "their" park for their particular entertainment.

I have no problem standing next to a bison. As long as he is hanging upside down while I was skinning him.

And in other news: “Daddy, I want to pet the lion!”

The latest version of the Lion King needs a huge disclaimer for Darwin Award aspirants. I can hardly wait for a story about kids getting near wild animals after seeing how cuddly Simba and Nala were in the movie.

We were at YNP two summers ago. On our way out, my then 6 YO grandson piped up, "I'm bored". At that moment, we encountered a bison meandering on the other side of the road. All the cars were stopped, and he walked right by our car, not more than 3 feet away. I got a great 10 second video from the relative safety of my car.

My grandson was bored no longer...lol. The bison was as nearly big as my Altima.

Wife and I were at YNP late summer 2018. Each day we were out and about we would see groups of idiots getting within 50 feet of grazing or active groups of bison. Even saw them do this when the bulls were kicking up dust.

During a tour in one of the little yellow antique busses, we saw a large group of Chinese tourists from a big tour bus literally run after (!!!) a momma bear and her cub in a clearing on the side of the road. Our driver was yelling at them to stop but to no avail. It was a miracle that the bear didn’t turn them into an all-you-can-eat buffet.

There’s too much dumb in the world.

Yes stupid parents.

There is a bison herd in this area. I drove through that area to work and if the bison were in sight of the highway people would be out trying to get pictures. Some would have the whole family wandering out into the herd.

I would stop and try to educate people on the danger, their size and they have more than enough speed to keep up with people running. Not once did anyone believe me, I quit trying.

“was in a group of roughly 50 people who were standing near the bison”

Bison is just trying to help us thin the herd.

Parents ran away from their girl instead of picking her up and taking her to safety? That poor girl will be scarred from life for being abandoned by Mom & Dad. Just awful.

They are from Florida. Do they try to pet the alligators, too?

And that, folks, is why folks in the past made sure to not get close to Mother Nature and her little friends.

The stupidity is astounding.

Wife and i just came back from Yollowstone.
Saw hundreds of elk
Hundreds of bison.
13 black bears.
A bald eagl.
One very large brown bear.
And lots of stoopids getting out of their vehicles to take selfies.
I root for the wild life to attack the stoopids.

“Poor kid’ indeed. Her relationship with Mom & Dad will never be the same. She learned she cannot trust them to protect her and keep her safe. That one little incident has scarred her for life. Sure, they may laugh about it, but her subconscious knows she was abandoned in her extreme time of need.

Wild is the key word.
Yesterday i went by an 8 foot gator who got run over.
Seemed dead.still i wouldn’t go close and do a selfie.
Came by later and it moved itself a couple hundred yards down the road.
“I’m not quite dead yet”.
Yeah, send your kids over to get a photo with that?
