I think it is difficult and expensive to keep a station in orbit. Quite different than just a satellite.
I understand the idea of sunk cost. Just like we left the LEM on the Moon and how I donate all the stuff I buy when I stay long term at the client site. I have donated appliances and even a bicycle. This time it is a dorm fridge and a microwave.
Cheaper to jettison than lug and store.

Let them waste their money.
The amount of money spent on space activities by China is a trivial fraction of their overall spending, as it has always been for the US as well. Building an extensive space-faring capability is not a waste of money - it's a smart investment in the future. If the Chinese wanted to waste money, there are plenty of worthless social welfare programs, farm subsidies and other money sinks to throw it down - we can tell them about that.
