'Top Gun' sequel, co-produced by China's Tencent, appears to remove Japanese, Taiwanese flags

Eagle-eyed viewers have spotted a curious discrepancy in the first trailer for “Top Gun: Maverick,” the sequel to the beloved ’80s classic “Top Gun,” which Paramount debuted Thursday — the patches on the iconic leather jacket worn by star Tom Cruise no longer bear the Taiwanese and Japanese flags.

One possible reason for the difference could be that “Top Gun: Maverick” is being produced, in part, by Tencent Pictures, a Chinese film distributor and production company. Tencent has co-financed films like “Wonder Woman,” “Kong: Skull Island,” “Venom” and the upcoming “Terminator: Dark Fate.”

China and Japan have long had a tumultuous relationship, and though bilateral ties have improved in recent months, the two wartime enemies continue to have grievances over historical and territorial issues.

As for self-governed and democratic Taiwan, Beijing calls the island one of its “core interests” and views the island nation as a renegade province that must be brought back into the fold — by force if necessary.

Paramount Pictures and Tencent Pictures did not immediately respond to request for comment by The Japan Times.

China has become one of the biggest film markets in the world, with many analysts suggesting that it could overtake the U.S. to become the top film market as early as this year.

Beijing wields an ever-growing amount of influence over how it is depicted in movies Americans make and watch and has pushed for the portrayal in films and other media of a friendlier, less menacing image of China.

Just like Hollywood kissed Hitler’s ass in the 30s.

Ok, so Hollywood studios essentially do the bidding of the Chinese government. I supposed we should be thankful they didn’t ban the US flag from the movie, too. Nike has already done so, as have various Democrat-controlled municipalities in the nation that believe the US flag offends the illegal aliens in America.

Anythibg they are making to pander to the chinese market, I have less than zero interest in.

You've just described the entire output of Hollywood. All productions now cater to the international market, and the Chinese are perhaps the biggest component of that market.

Why would an Aircraft Carrier be named “USS Galveston”?

The ONLY reason would have been Hollywood was trying not to be political.

That was a pretty dumb patch to begin with.

I’ve been to their office in Beverly Hills. The chinks are locked in their offices while the white leftards are their sales guys. Other than Disney, this may be one of the offices where I hate everyone there and my staff also said the same thing..

“Yep, thirty years 0-6 not on a promotion list, .... You’re out!” * Keep in mind how few Americans these days have any knowledge concerning military “up or out” policy. Or even what rank an 06 is or how that rank fits into the grand scheme of things military. They’re totally oblivious. So, I say just enjoy the popcorn and the movie 🍿

#10 Anybody know what the storyline is?

Tom Cruise is down on his luck, he talks with a mentor who gives him a speech that picks him up. He runs, He jumps around, he drives in fast cars and rides fast motorcycles. He is against impossible odds but in the end wins.

You know, same old same old.

I heard that the Chinese release of Iron Man had some different dialog and an additional character, hadn’t heard about a different release of Captain America.

I do know that in the rest of the world, it wasn’t “Captain America”, it was “The First Avenger”.

And I recall the Superman reboot saying “truth, justice, and all that stuff” (instead of ‘the American way’). Never saw the film but recall the anti-US sentiment being shipped to the world.
