The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.
If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.
This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you wont be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isnt asked.
It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!
Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to our New & Improved Ping List.
NOTE: This is a once a week Ping List. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!
Yes, yes, yes........
The rain already started not too long ago. Good thing I replaced a wiper blade as soon as I got back. Already re-filled a bowl with rain water. I like to save it off for later. I keep it out of the Sun so it doesn’t evaporate (must get another cheap water sprinkler bucket)
The jungle is still - the jungle.
There is a tomato variety called “Punta Banda” that combines the best of both worlds. Its a small, compact, bushy plant that doesn’t need staking or caging, but it produces continuously until frost. The tomatoes are a little bigger than a golf ball, and are good both sliced or cooked. The stem pulls free, so if you use a juicer you can toss them in whole. You can get it from https://seedtreasures.com/
I’m totally hooked on fresh Asparagus spears in the oven, drizzled with olive oil, garlic salt, black pepper and grated Parmesan cheese.
(Even the CHEAP stuff out of the Kraft shaker works just fine.)
400 degrees or so for 20 minutes? Heaven on a plate! :)
The only thing I let go to seed (besides myself!) is my lettuce and they produce cute little seedlings for me to re-plant in the fall.
Ellendra is the PRO on saving seed, so she can chime in here when she has time. ;)
I added you to our New & Improved Ping List! :)
Yeah I do the garlic salt and Parmesan too.
I forgot about the olive oil - I toss them in a bowl with olive oil and salt first.
I still love my broccoli but now asparagus too.
Zucchini Noodles with Creamy Avocado Pesto
Serves: 8 Servings
Ingredients
6 large zucchini, spiralized
1 Tbsp olive oil
For the Sauce:
2 ripe avocados
1 cup fresh basil leaves
3 cloves garlic
¼ cup pine nuts
2 Tbsp lemon juice
½ tsp. sea salt
3 Tbsp olive oil
Cracked black pepper, to taste
Instructions
Spiralize your zucchini and set aside on paper towels so that any excess water is soaked up.
In a food processor, add avocados, basil leaves, garlic, pine nuts, lemon juice and sea salt and pulse until finely chopped. Then with the motor still running, add olive oil in a slow stream until emulsified and creamy.
Drizzle olive oil in a large skillet over medium high heat then add zucchini noodles, cooking for about 1 to 2 minutes until tender.
Add zucchini noodles to a large bowl and toss with avocado pesto. Season with cracked pepper and a little Parmesan, serve and enjoy!
My goodness you’re having a party!
Asparagus is great rolled in a couple of sheets of phyllo dough and baked. Drizzle with butter first. Yummy!
Our power has been out a couple of days. Capping off a tough week. Hubby and I both sick with a bronchial bug, on antibiotics. On Tuesday we had to have our 15 year old maltese mix Yogi put to sleep. Actually 15 years and 3 months. So we are now petless and house plantless. Just have the garden and all the critters we so outside. That will take some getting used to. We had a heck of a heat wave here in west Michigan then some nasty storms that knocked out the power to many. I am due to pick green beans in the morning and catch up on weeding. Still waiting for our first ripe tomato. Enjoyed catching up on all the posts. Liz - yummy recipes!
Hmmm, never had any of that. Sorry about your pet.
Thanks much!
I have my Mom’s two dogs. It’s all I have left of her, mostly.
They’re getting older. One of them sticks to my like glue. He’s my good buddy.
Yogi always wanted to be close to me but the last month maybe he did not want me out of his sight. He wasn’t in pain but had some anxiety. Partial blindness, deafness, and his rear legs started to go - spinal myelopathy. That us beautiful you took in your mom’s dogs.
I was fortunate to get them back. Things were very rough.
Still very tough but fighting on.
Hitting the sack but I will remember you in prayer. God bless!
Thank you for those prayers! (guess you’ll read this later!)
Wish I could get consistently ripe & ready Avocado by me. They're either mushy or hard as a rock and you have to wait for a number of days and then time it perfectly to use them.
I’m so sorry about your doggy. :( We lost our Pearl (Basset) this time last year. ((Momwithhope))
Feel better, soon! I’m glad that stupid little heatwave is over for BOTH of us!
