A swimming school of fish fossilized in real time
by Phil Robinson

A limestone shale slab from the Green River Formation, USA, has incredibly captured a mass of 257 fish swimming together in a school.1 The fish, each just under 1 in (2.5 cm) long, belong to an extinct species, Erismatopterus levatus. Just before being fossilised they were swimming in the same direction. Swimming together in a school is a dynamic process and this slab amazingly preserves, in freeze frame as it were, this coordinated collective motion. Such discoveries are rare. As pointed out in the New York Times, Its difficult, for instance, to find evidence of schooling fish in the fossil record. You need just the right circumstances to fossilize something like a school of fish in place within a rock. Then, that rock has to survive intact long enough for a paleontologist to discover it and study it.2

I think Woody Allen did a movie about this.
That is amazing. Cool!
Don’t be late for ‘school’!
Sort of looks like a school of wild undomesticated sperm.
If you zoom in, they are all not pointed in the same direction. Looks to me like they were trapped in a shallow pool with a slight current from left to right. They pointed themselves the best they could to the left to receive the last bit of flow through their gills before they suffocated.
I thought fossilized fish were only found at Long John Silver’s.
Estimated age - 50 million years. Found in limestone, a marine sediment, in Montana; several hundred miles from the ocean. If anything, this disproves the Bibles tribal creation myth. A worldwide flood on a young Earth would have created a thick layer of assorted debris on bedrock, not thin layers of fine marine sediment.
you know- you are insulting a lot of people- why not just make your opinion known without the nasty insult? You take one small incident and claim it’ disproves’ the bible because (insert opinion here), but there are many flood evidences that strongly indicate the flood did happen- As you well know- or should well know- one scenario does not apply to all situations=- while there would be thick layers of debri found in some places, in other places there would not- and what do you know? We do find thick layers of debri in flood evidences that go to supporting a flood view-
So, while you’re obviously entitled to express your opinions, it would be nice if you did so without the nasty little jabs towards millions of people that Love their Creator! But i suspect you’ll get all ruffled and coem back with more insults- whatever
Lol!
What was the nasty jab? He/Ve didn’t call your belief lunacy, just disagreed with the theory.
...And Captain D’s........................
calling it ‘tribal myth’ isn’t a simple disagreement- it’s an intentional insulting jab at people who believe the evidences found in nature show that there was a flood just as their Creator said there was- It’s an insult to their belief- insinuating that someone who is a Christian and believes the bible believes in myths is insulting-
Hydrologic sorting is both a very logical explanation and a provable one. The creation of fossils requires a specific set of conditions. Both of the above statements, after study, will give pause for thought concerning the flood.
P.S.- Your tagline...no worries. There have been too many proofs.
Can’t be from Captain Disease. The fish are too big.
If anything this proves a sudden cataclysm covered these fish with sediment. The only way for anything to fossilized is to be quickly inundated. Fossils like this cover the whole earth and fossilized sea life is found on top of the tallest mountains. The fountains of the deep were suddenly opened and the water canopy that enveloped the earth rained on the earth to cover the highest mountains.
I have always had a fascination with geology, and even a casual geologist can see processes that obviously took great ages of time. I try to live in reality, and physical reality trumps mythology.
