Exodus 20:7 “You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, for the LORD will not hold guiltless anyone who takes his name in vain.”

Matthew 6:9 “Pray then like this: “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name.”

This is a warning to all who think God will 'overlook' the act of blaspheming His name. HE WILL NOT. I will not matter if you are a street sweeper or the leader of the greatest Republic on earth......GOD will drop you like a stone.

You are right. Cursing is inappropriate, and not presidential. Especially misusing God’s name, as in saying”G.D.” not once, but twice. This is the first time, that I know of, that President Trump has used such language at a rally. Hopefully, it will be the last.

What does the commandment actually say? What does “You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain” mean?

If I were to invoke God’s name falsely by saying “Thus sayeth the Lord, “ after some pronouncement that came out of my own imagination, wouldn’t that be a sin? It seems an oversight on God’s part if it isn’t. Indeed, I offer that you proclaiming that Trump saying G.D. is what the commandment refers to is itself dangerously close to violating the commandment.

The interpretation of falsely invoking God’s authority as what the commandment is about is definitely in keeping with the adjacent commandments. Things like worshiping no other God’s, not worshipping any graven images, honoring the Sabbath day, and not accusing people falsely are all very much in keeping with the notion of not claiming to speak for God when you aren’t.

Then there is the matter of what the Name of God actually is. Clearly “God” isn’t the Name of our God. We might differ on that question. I have a favorite answer: His Name is what He supplied to Moses when asked for His Name. He said “I am ‘I AM’” just like I might answer “I am Bob” if someone asked for my name. I believe the name supplied to Moses was “I AM”

I agree with you though. Trump’s use of profanity was coarse and unpresidential, and Trump should mind his tongue.

Revelation David, I'm going to assume by your posting name that you spend a whole lot more time around the Bible than I do. That said, at the risk of being pedantic, God's name is not 'God' nor is it 'Lord'. His name is rendered יהוה, Yud hey vav hey. Nobody knows how to say it, because the vowels are missing and the ancient Jews made a point of never saying it aloud. So I very much doubt if President Trump actually managed to say God's name, let alone say it in vain. And then there's the "in vain" part. What does that mean? If President Trump uttered the phrase "I am יהוה" or "I am speaking with the authority of יהוה" or "יהוה approves my message and programs", you might have a point. Given the fact that "the other side" booed the mention of God at their convention and has no compunction at using many vulgar phrases, I'm pretty sure that God knows, that for all of his (and our) shortcomings, Trump is on His side.
