Reading kept me sane in my school years. Thankfully in the 8th grade we had a great school library and by the 10th grade I had an adult card to the Public Library.
Sailed the seas with Captain Blood, Beat to Quarters with Horatio Hornblower, Captured the Manila Galleon, dug for Apache Gold and Yaqui Silver along with Coronado’s Children. crossed the Sahara with Beau Geste and brothers, Soon I was capturing Mexico and Peru with Cortez, twice! Stuck a stake in Dracula, listened for THE RATS IN THE WALLS with Lovecraft, beat back the Indians in Conspiracy of Pontiac...
I do believe the teachers hated it that I was reading far above the other kids in class back then, who were still reading “Juvenile” books.
Today, I would rather read than watch a movie.
Reading is such an undeniable pleasure. I love getting into bed & reading before I go to sleep. Escaping into a world away from problems, bills, & work is heaven.
So sad that your teachers were not thrilled about your love of reading.
My fifth grade teacher loved my ability and comprehension and got the an adult library card. And brought me books to keep. I was fortunate and wish I could find her to thank her. Hello Mrs Pascowitz
