Hundreds of Crabs With 'Real Big Claws' Invade Florida Town After Heavy Rain Forces [tr]
Newsweek ^ | July 16,2019 | Aristos Georgiou

Dan Skowronski, a local resident in Port St. Lucie—a city on the Atlantic coast in the south of the state—captured footage of the invasion and posted it on social media. The video shows numerous crabs crawling around his yard and home while Skowronski describes what he is seeing. "The invasion of land crabs," he says in the video. "They must have got rained out of their holes. And they're everywhere. They're more scared of me than I am of them."

They hardly look worth the effort.

I remember the Cubans chasing them around with hooked sticks. They’d (the crabs)get into the laundry room at the dorms ( HomesteadAFB) and you’d hear their claws clacking against the washers and dryers.

If you stood along the side of US 1 (desolate at night in the 80’s) you could hear them moving, clack clack clack. A bit creepy for sure!

We called them ghost crabs.

The Cubans went after them hard. I stopped to watch one time. A little old urban lady had a stick with a bent nail at the end. She was pretty deft at hooking them. She was going after a big one in some rocks and couldn’t keep up. Some young woman took her stick and caught up to it and wailed on it. When the little old lady caught up, she looked at the crab, looked at the woman, said “Muy mal,” and snatched her stick back.

Ghost crabs are smaller and hang at the water line at the beach. Fast as hell.

They are smaller and hang by water. That’s why they were all over the highway back then. Lots of canals, small lakes and marshy land in the area.

The big blue ones? The few ghost crabs I saw were white, at the beach, running and hiding in footprints. Lot of different crabs down there. Climb a mangrove tree, find crabs in it.

If they were edible, Asians would be grabbing them in no time flat. :-)

This is what I saw at the beach. The ones all over the road in Homestead were the big blue ones pictured in the original story link. Up to 5 inches across the carapace.

Are they edible? If so...don’t see the problem.
