It's easy to defend them from what the media claims are attacks on their ethnic origins. Trump should be trying to attack them on their specific policies.

If Trump meant for them to go back to their countries, I don’t have an issue with it, either...not trying to minimize or soften anything...that’s how I interpret what he tweeted.
He didn’t specifically say “go back to the countries...”
just saying what most of us already have thought about people who come from another country or who’s parents came from another country and all they do is complain about the USA.

1. Go back to their countries.
2. Fix their countries.
3. RETURN HERE and show us how it’s done.
So the NeverTrumpers only heard the #1 part, and (again) don’t report truthfully.

It was a response to anti-American public comments by Omar...
President Trump’s little news conference shows exactly why he is so great. Talk about patience and control.
How many of us would be able to control the bully press and calmly sit down and sign an important document immediately after.
This is why he is loved. Never backs down, always lands on his feet, holds his head up high and repeats and explains exactly what he meant when he said it.
I sincerely believe the man is a genius at reading people, only the best can do that consistently.
I don't know too many people who concluded that based on his Tweet.
Anyone who read the 'tweet' would have no choice but to conclude what he actually tweeted...

So interesting to see “Progressive” Democrat Congresswomen, who originally came from countries whose governments are a complete and total catastrophe, the worst, most corrupt and inept anywhere in the world (if they even have a functioning government at all), now loudly......

....and viciously telling the people of the United States, the greatest and most powerful Nation on earth, how our government is to be run. Why don’t they go back and help fix the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came. Then come back and show us how....
They are publicly telling everyone how screwed up our Country is...Trump is pointing out that the U.S. is no where near as screwed up as their ancestral homelands so before they criticize us, go fix up their own countries to where they are better than we are and THEN come back and show us how to do it...
There is no other way his tweet could be taken unless it is misquoted and lied about...
