The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.
If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.
This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you wont be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isnt asked.
It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!
NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!
TOPICS: Food; Gardening; Hobbies; Outdoors

We have all raised beds now, too - except for the Sweet Corn and Winter Squash in the lower garden - he just tills that up and we put down black rubber sheeting that is normally wrapped around underground pipes (scavenged; Beau was in Construction for decades) for some weed control.
As we age, we’ll add ‘layers’ to the raised beds in the kitchen garden, too. Our plan is to not have to leave our farm until they carry us out feet first! ;)

Slow and steady wins the race!
We have SO much to accomplish at our ‘new’ 1900 farmstead that it gets overwhelming. One project at a time. (Which is hard for me, LOL!)

We’ve been lucky, but I think the house will blow away before the greenhouse will; Beau anchored that baby in tight!
I did lose one of the ceiling vents to wind damage. We had a freak wind 50mph wind from the East, when 99.999% of the time our weather comes from the West. It’s so mangled it needs full replacement. That’s on the ‘Things To Fix’ list before Winter.

WOW! I love it all! Nice to see corn tasseling; that’s a rare thing here in the Midwest, but it’s finally GROWING at least!
That Marigold bed filled in nicely, and all of her Impatiens look lovely!
Hat’s off to Mrs. Bender! :)

I have whittled it down to two types of garlic... Early Chinese Pink and German Red which is on the greenhouse counter drying for storage.

A Hula Hoe is our main defense against weeds and this year the predominate weed is Purslane. We mulch our Strawberry bed with Rice Hulls we purchase from the feed store...

We had a freak wind 50mph wind from the East, when 99.999% of the time our weather comes from the West. That may have been when i turned our largest fan towards the West for bit when the wind was off the ocean. If you could smell salt water...

I like hard neck garlic. Lasts longer in storage.

No saltwater smell; you’re off the hook!
We even situated the greenhouse BASED upon prevailing winds...but, you can never bet against Mother Nature. She always wins. ;)

We mulch our Strawberry bed with Rice Hulls we purchase from the feed store... Interesting, but I see differing opinions on the effects of them. . And I presume they decompose in time, and help the soil. I wonder about Buckwheat hulls.

We have been using rice hulls on our strawberries for several years and have bumper crops as it’s just a MULCH and not a soil additive until we move the bed and then it’s spaded in with steer manure...
