The best part about the show is that it means what you want it to. In one of the last interviews McGoohan gave they asked him about the proliferation of stories on the internet of people claiming to have run into him and talked about their theory of The Prisoner and he said they were right. Many of these theories are quite contradictory, so the interviewer asked if these tales were largely fiction. McGoohan said he couldn’t say on a case by case but it did happen often. He then went on to say his goal of the show was to make people think, engage their mind and come up with their own interpretation, so as far as he was concerned anybody that did that was right, whether or not their explanation bore any resemblance to what he had in mind while making the show. They did what he hoped they’d do, and therefore good on them. And no he never fessed up to what he had in mind. Took it to the grave. I’m in the Six is Drake camp.

So am I — Number Six was John Drake. McGoohan could never admit it for legal reasons. Just remember that the photo of him that was used so often was Drake’s on “Danger Man,” and that the character Potter from that show appeared in “The Girl Who Was Death” episode.
