Because the expansion of the universe is not limited to the speed of light. Space itself was expanding, NOT the stuff inside it.

The 'Big Bang Theory' contains an early time period called 'Expansion', where the universe expanded faster than the speed of light.

Because a light year is a measure of distance, not time.
