I remember being told color sets were for fairly wealthy people until about the mid 1970s?

For poor folks the sold magnifying screens with blue, brown and green sections, you placed in front of the TV.

RIP. I loved watching laugh in as a kid. I used to make prank calls pretending to be the telephone operator that Lily Tomlin played.

It’s quite remarkable how many iconic actors and actresses got their start with The Twilight Zone. The list includes William Shatner, Burt Reynolds, Elisabeth Montgomery, Charles Bronson, George Kennedy and countless others.

Also liked the toppling man on a tricycle.

Or Tyrone Horneye harassing Gladys Ormphby with “heh, heh, heh, heh, heh....wanna see me take the wrapper off my Wal-NETTO?”

Robert Redford. He played “Death”.

More importantly, what will the answer be to 4 down. 4 letter word ending in E, “laugh-in comedian”.

I would say that 2 out of 10 crossword puzzles have this question.

Just occurred to me......here it is 50 years later and we still laugh at the catch phrases from Laugh-in (and from another thread, Monty Python and the Holy Grail). How many of today’s shows will have that kind of staying power?

“You’d be surprised how often that happens. I am crossing my fingers for Oliva de Haviland”

The most beautiful actress ever.

My dad got the first one in our neighborhood.
Everyone came by to see the color snow between channels

We had 2. One was the massive console with the record player on the right and the stereo on the left. My folks had the 1 on the roll cart in their bedroom. If we were good kids and had friends over, we were allowed to roll it into our room.

The vacuum tubes were pushed hard in the Color sets, the horizontal gain or whatever, they wore out quick. There used to be a TV/Radio repair shop on every corner. I remember dad carrying me in his arm and we’d test the tubes at the Drugstore on their handy dandy U-Chek-It tube tester. He’d set the voltages up and let me press the “test” button. Great teamwork.

Before solid state took over completely they had hybrid sets, with Selenium rectifiers. When those failed, everybody knew it, a really bad, bad, acrid metallic smell, stink up the whole house. I remember the Apollo 11 landing, the “Live From Moon” graphic, and everyone telling me to shutup. Seems to me they landed sometime around 9 or 10 Central time at night, or maybe that was the moonwalk. It took them a while to depressurize the cabin so they could open the door. Had to get Mom to sign off on letting me stay up late.
