A former New York City police commissioner said Wednesday that he wants to see Antifa categorized as a domestic terror organization after its members brutally beat a conservative journalist covering a protest in Portland, Ore., last week.

ANTIFA was spawned in Germany back in the late twenties/early thirties.
During the cold war, they were like many other communist agitation groups operating throughout Europe from behind the Iron Curtain. With a caveat: ANTIFA just might bring mortars or rocket propelled grenade launchers to the party.
Think of them as a Communist Hamas.
So no, they aren’t homegrown in any way and that is why they exhibit a discipline and level of organization which the Vietnam era protests never came close to.
They aren’t domestic, and they rise to the level of being a paramilitary rather than merely protesters.
I read intelligence dispatches about their activities now and again in the eighties even in a battalion level S2 shop.
That’s as much of a brief as I can give you.
