A new gas tax went into effect in California today which helped make California’s gas cost $1 more per gallon than the national average. From CNBC:

California’s already-high gas prices jumped up again on July 1, with a new 5.6 cents per gallon gasoline tax hike.

The increase brings the average price per gallon in California for regular gasoline to a national high of $3.755 per gallon, according to the American Automobile Association, more than a dollar a gallon more than the national average of $2.717 per gallon.

California also charges sales tax on gasoline.

I saw a breakdown once of the retail cost of gas in California, and how it differs from other states. And the key difference was the state gas tax being higher than other states, plus the sales tax, plus the carbon tax on gasoline.

I wish gas pumps had to show the retail price breakdown, so we would all know how much in taxes we are paying.

And as others have noted, between federal and state taxes, government makes more money per gallon, than the “evil” oil companies who do all the heavy lifting, to drill for oil and refine and deliver to your local gas station.

Sorry, but THIS ARTICLE IS A LIE....

PA, has the lovely distinction of having the highest state gas tax in the nation.. at 57.6 cents a gallon, and the current regular, and price right now is around 2.80-2.90 a gallon.

California does have high taxes, no doubt, but it the reason its gas price is so high, is as you pointed out, not because simply of their gas tax.

See 23... California’s gas tax is NOT the highest in the nation, and its price is WELL above the cost of the state who does have the highest gas tax in the nation.

There’s no way I’ll buy a gallon of gas (or anything else) in California.

I have no plans to visit Bulgaria, either.
