Amen!
So, instead of refuting my reasoning and showing me where my thinking is flawed, you just insult me?
I know for a fact that I dont want to be paying $5 hidden tax on a $2 loaf of bread while some politician is grandstanding about greedy wheat farmers.
Actually, I think the article I looked at and quoted was incorrect. Fed tax per gallon of gasoline is 18.4 cents, MN state tax is 28.6 cents per gallon so a total of 47 cents per gallon of 2.50 per gallon is (47/250 * 100) or 18.8% of the whole, not 11.5%
What? a $5 dollar tax on bread. You are on drugs.
There was a small gas station chain in Northern CA that printed the gas taxes on its grocery bags. I applaud the chains owner for his attempt to educate people. Sadly, the last time I was in that area, it looked like his chain was bought out by one of the big companies.
What is to prevent politicians from putting a $5 tax (or 250%) on food items? Once they are given a green light to hide taxes on consumer items, expect the taxes to spiral up without limit, while politicians grandstand about big baby food and abandon any pretense of controlling government spending.
Everything I have said is based on political behavior that we already witness. Handing the politicians a blank check in the form of sales or VAT taxeswhich *will* be hidden, since they do not want people to know how much they really pay in taxesis a recipe for disaster and uncontrolled growth of government.
Instead of insulting me, how about explaining how my logic is flawed, and why I am wrong about my assessment of politicians. Also explain why an across the board flat tax is inferior to other methods of collecting taxes, and how that would *not* give poor people a reason to care about government growth.
You can “hide” a 5$ tax on bread. LOL.
I’m not defending the Dems, but the their thinking is that state sales taxes and also upstream taxes (like gas taxes, excise taxes, etc.) are also paid by Illegals, thus making Illegals taxpayers, even if they are skipping out on 85% of the taxes that a legally employed American pays.
As to a VAT, they will go for that, because even for Dems, there does come a point where they have to start PAYING for all they promise, and the VAT is about the only effective way to extract the amount of money needed, from where the money resides, which is the Middle Class, as those people will not put up with increased income taxes, particularly after having them lowered to next to nothing.
Who said they wanted to end national income tax? They want a national sales tax ON TOP of the national income tax.
“Theres not a single country that has engaged on a value-added-tax (VAT, sales tax) that has dumped income tax. Most European countries run a minimum of 15-percent on the VAT, and maintain their income tax bracket.”
Yep, that is the case. No matter how they sell it, they are only doing it for one reason, and that is to INCREASE REVENUE, and they’re not about to remove their other sources.
But yes, there will be a hard push for a VAT if they win, and yes, part of the push will be an appeal to our side by saying “even Illegals will have to pay the VAT”, and yes, many of the ‘leaders’ on our side will say “daa, makes sense to me, daa”.
VATS are very very bad, they make domestic products even LESS competitive.. Tariffs are good and righteous because the PROMOTE DOMESTIC INDUSTRY. All true Patriots love tariffs.
“All at once would work for me.”
And the ONLY WAY that promise (replacing the national income tax with a VAT) should be allowed to be made is if the VAT can only be triggered after the 16th Amendment is REPEALED. Otherwise we’ll have both, I promise that.
“An Ex Dem is defending the income tax. Figures.”
Now be nice, it takes time to recover. As I posted above, I would only support a VAT if it was contingent on repeal of the 16th Amendment (since otherwise we’ll have both), and there is NO WAY that the Dems will allow that to happen, due to their view of taxes being a form of ‘Social Justice’.
How do you commit treason against a tax system?
VAT bad. Tariff good.
It’s also not a given that the VAT would be uniformly applied. Suppose they target the VAT, maybe 200% on firearms (to punish red state people) and 2% on Nike sneakers (for their ‘friends’).
VATs can give LOTS OF POWER to people who we really don’t want having that power.
Instead of? Hahahahahaha
“VATS are very very bad, they make domestic products even LESS competitive.. Tariffs are good and righteous because the PROMOTE DOMESTIC INDUSTRY. All true Patriots love tariffs.”
I’m sure VATS would be applied to imports, although perhaps that makes them ‘tariffs’, officially. Overall, I agree, I like tariffs too, especially the ones needed to protect our industries involved with the security of this country.
I also don’t mind the fact that tariffs kill unions.
The only reason why the EU gets away with their socialist finance engine, i.e. the VAT, is that they hide behind high import tariffs. We would eat their lunch if they dropped their tariffs and the kept their VAT. That giant sucking sound....
They want the equivalent of the EU VAT tax.
