A friend who was a lifeguard way back said illegals and the poor use public pools as their bath/shower/toilet, and was so bad in the summer that the health department routinely had pools closed, drained, and refilled due to sewer-level fecal coliform counts.

Given the level of public health awareness today I can’t imagine swimming in a municipal or other pool open to the unwashed public.
Sorry, give me an old fashioned swimming hole first. I grew up swimming in farm ponds and country rivers, and never had a sick day once in decades of summers.

A guy I know is in the hospitality industry and has been in charge of hotel and resort pools. He once told me nobody would ever get in a pool if they saw the tests and the stuff he has seen. I haven’t been in one since. Chlorine doesn’t kill everything.
