Jony Ive, Apple’s chief design officer, is leaving the company, Apple announced on Thursday.

Apple stock dropped 1% on the news in after-hours trading.

Ive is considered one of the most important people at Apple, responsible for the industrial design and the look and feel of all major Apple products, including the iPhone and the Mac. He had worked at Apple for more than 20 years.

I guess they told Jony to get the “h” out of there and the rest of him went with it.

Actually it’s Sir Jonathan Paul Ive.

Congratulations on winning the first "Well, la-di-da" of the evening.

>>The mouse has to be plugged in to recharge, and the plug is on the bottom, so you can’t use it while it’s charging, and it doesn’t give you a warning until you’re about 20 minutes from losing power.

I have a high end rechargeable Logitech mouse. It charges via mini-USB, and is completely usable when corded while recharging. This isn’t that hard, and that was a complete crap design decision by Apple. Someone’s head should have rolled. Probably would have under Jobs. He had a reputation of being a tough taskmaster.

Moved on from Apple too.

IPhones where a great innovation - 10 years ago.
Loved my Quadra back in the day and my
G3 Blueberry ibook.
Adopting USB was a real innovation.
Lots of great firsts over the years.

There are just lots of other choices.

Ive was never concerned with function - that was for others to figure out. His job was to make attractive, desirable industrial design.

I agree regarding the demise of the MagSafe connector for power. Obstensibly, the idea is that you can now charge your laptop on any port (a bit of convenience), but the MagSafe was a stroke of genius that hasn’t been duplicated. I can’t count the number of times the magnetic connection saved my MBP... and contrary to the issues others had with the cords fraying... I never had one completely fail. I did have one have the outer sheath crack on my old white Macbook adapter - fixed with heat shrink.

My new MBP (I’ve had it less than 2 months) works well enough - but the jury is still out with 4 USB-C connectors and a headphone jack .... no SD slot, no other forms of connection... I have to have a dongle to connect just about anything...

They use to make a few mice that recharged by simply keeping them in a dock when not in use. One worked REALLY well - and lasted me for several years. The second I bought to replace it didn’t last as long.

I have a crazy-cheap Bluetooth rechargeable mouse (visibly a copy of Apple’s) that was stupid cheap and works as well as the Apple mouse...

FYI... You can get what are essentially Magsafe cables for USB-C and several other connectors now. There’s a small detachable magnetic piece on the end of the cable that plugs right into your USB-C port and attaches/detaches to or from the rest of the cable. Several companies are making cables like this now and some may be better than others, but in any case you do still have a magsafe-like cable as an option.

That is what I was thinking. It used to be so innovative. Each new Apple project kind of blew one’s mind. Now it’s “oh, it’s 10% better than before” like Frosted Flakes or something.

(And all I use is Apple, so I’m not knocking - just hoping that they get off their butts and creating something interesting again.)

I wish they would find the guy that built the iMac G5 that let you take out 4 screws and replace any part in the computer and give him Jony's job. They should fir the people that are making the MacMini practically irreparable by anyone other than pro techs. They are addicted to the thin look maybe they could do something a little more like the PC NUC and less like an iPad. ( I also own all Apple Products wouldn't use Windows or Android even if they were free.)

but you can't have it plugged in while it's in your carry bag, cause it sticks straight out the bottom.

iPad Pro Case This case charges the pen when it is in place no muss no fuss. On Amazon.

My new MBP has the same set up; I miss the SD card slot more than I anticipated. Someone in the design team went for style instead of workhorse design.
