MURRAY, UtahA Utah woman wants to see change after an antiquated ordinance led her to receive misdemeanor charges for allowing her cat to lay on their front lawn.
When Kate Anderson was first approached by animal control, she thought something terrible had happened to their cat. Then, the officer gave her a citation, carrying the weight of two misdemeanor charges, for letting her cat law on their own lawn.
Milo, come here! Anderson said as she made kissy noises to her cat while it laid on their front lawn.
In the Anderson household, Milo is treated like family.
Hes got a cat door, so he just comes and goes and is a cat, Anderson said.
However, they never expected their furry feline would be the reason they were slapped with misdemeanor charges.
There he is, back at the scene of the crime, Anderson laughed as her cat came near her and laid on the lawn.
On Monday, Kate said Milo had let himself outside and was laying on their front lawn someone then took a picture of Milo and reported it.
I just got a ticket for my cat being outside, in my yard, Anderson said in disbelief.
An animal control employee received the report and made a house call to Kates Murray home. They then wrote her a citation.
This is a cat who is neutered and micro-chipped and vaccinated, and is not a menace to society, Anderson said.
Kate lifted up the ordinance and started to explain what it said, Thats telling me I have to call for my court date for my misdemeanors of having my cat outside.
Two charges were listed on the citation, both Class B misdemeanors. The first for having an animal at large, the second for not having an animal license attached.

He'll probably say that the cat doesn't belong on her lawn, it belongs on the roof of her car.
Eat, Drink and Be Merry, for tomorrow ye may be in Utah.
Sounds like a leash law on steroids. My neighbor’s cat lies in our yard often. Keeps the squirrels in check some. I worry when he lies down in the street. I keep telling him I don’t want to see him become flat cat.
But they have no problem with "illegals at large". Maybe illegals should be required to have to pay for, and wear a license whenever they're outdoors too.
Throw some mothballs in your landscaping, cats don’t like the smell
Once you attach the metal license tags to the fish they tend to sink to the bottom of the aquarium.
I wonder if they have a Cat Detector Van?
Even as a cat lover, I have to agree, if you live within five acres of your nearby neighbors. They can be very destructive. In our townhome street here, one person's cat jumped a high fence and ate a neighbor's koi out of their koi pond.
“One of my co-workers neighbors keeps calling animal control on his dogs for barking but its not his dogs.”
A neighbor put a kennel run about 50’ from my window. The dog barked constantly and the neighbor didn’t give a crap about it when I talked with him.
For the next week every time the dog barked i’d do a loud “SHHHH!” and toss a firecracker out the back door. After that all it took was a “SHHH!” and it would run into its doghouse and eventually it quit barking altogether.
