The annual summer solstice when the northern pole on our ever-twirling planet achieves its maximum tilt toward the mighty sun marks the arrival of the years longest day and the years shortest night. Its an enchanted moment, surrounded by many other nearly-as-long days and nearly-as-short nights, a miraculous excess of bright sunlit hours that conspire to push darkness into retreat.
And to celebrate this bounty? The birds warble at 5 a.m., your neighbor mows his lawn at 9 p.m., and your kids beg to stay up way too late. Rude brightness wakes you up at a God-awful hour and, later, tricks you into remaining at your office well past the point when you should be asking to see the menu.
Wow, its already 7 p.m. doesnt feel like it! Let me fire off another email.
Most people welcome the long days that come with summer, which officially began in the Northern Hemisphere at 11:54 a.m. on Friday. And then there are the haters, those who loathe the unending light that doesnt give way to night until its almost time for bed.
I find it terribly depressing, Barbara Stein said. She likes eating dinner by candlelight. Dark city nights invigorate her. Still snowing in some areas and the libs are blaming global warming.

Eff that, i live here and people having a blast,
Massive snow melt going on here in the High Sierra Mountains of California, creeks and rivers are running very high and cold. Woe be to those fall into the water. Still a lot of snow above 9,000 feet.
Just leave the freekin clocks alone!
I like long sunny days. So far there haven’t been a lot of sunny days.
We had frost on June 10th. Came real close to it again on the 23rd at 34 degrees for a low.
Warmth is what usually pleases me about summer.
I detest long summer days.
Personally, I’m crepuscular.

EVERYTHING depresses liberals.
Yep, snowed here (in Montana) pretty hard this past Thursday. Today, it was in the 50s and low 60s with heavy rain. Ah, summer :o)
Here is a novel idea for Ms Izadi....MOVE!
I love this exact time of year. Super long days and it hasn’t got too hot yet here.
Actually, the days are getting shorter now. :/
Pedantic response. A few days is not comment worthy. I use an 8” SchmidtCassegrain, consult astronomical tables from time to time, and although I have to wait longer for darkness this time of year, the comfortable temperatures make it worthwhile. No mosquitoes here at the moment either.

She should get a time share. One in Nome, the other in the Falkland Islands.
