The annual summer solstice when the northern pole on our ever-twirling planet achieves its maximum tilt toward the mighty sun marks the arrival of the years longest day and the years shortest night. Its an enchanted moment, surrounded by many other nearly-as-long days and nearly-as-short nights, a miraculous excess of bright sunlit hours that conspire to push darkness into retreat.
And to celebrate this bounty? The birds warble at 5 a.m., your neighbor mows his lawn at 9 p.m., and your kids beg to stay up way too late. Rude brightness wakes you up at a God-awful hour and, later, tricks you into remaining at your office well past the point when you should be asking to see the menu.
Wow, its already 7 p.m. doesnt feel like it! Let me fire off another email.
Most people welcome the long days that come with summer, which officially began in the Northern Hemisphere at 11:54 a.m. on Friday. And then there are the haters, those who loathe the unending light that doesnt give way to night until its almost time for bed.
I find it terribly depressing, Barbara Stein said. She likes eating dinner by candlelight. Dark city nights invigorate her. When Id leave my office in the wintertime, it felt like a whole new experience was starting, the 68-year-old D.C. resident said. Whereas in the summer, its like, blah, blah, blah. The thought of enduring another summer contributed to her decision to retire in 2008

Dark night whiners! Summers and sunlight are the best! Get off your butts and work, and youll fall asleep in the light!
Man, I thought I had the html pic insert process down, but apparently not.
No matter. Right clicked each individually and they opened in iCloud. Linux w/Firefox.
The best decision of our Founnders was Washinton D.C. LOL!
Hot, and hunid.
Hmm... Seems something is different about iCloud links. I have no trouble with pic links from web pages, but havent tried to link to iCloud before.
Well, maybe you can describe what you see to everyone else. It will be just like the golden age of radio. In the meantime, Ill keep experimenting.
Thanks for letting me know theyre viewable with a right click, though.
I’m going to NJ in august. Long beach island. Personally, I always get depressed there. Absolutely nothing to do for a redhead.
They had to drive to work in it.....
Summer means fat urban broads having to find excuses why they do not want to go the the beach.
I have seasonal affective disorder and while I do not care for the extreme heat the sunlight literally makes me feel better.

I HAAAAATE SUMMER!!!
I’m not an egg!!!
And I too love the ambiance of the night.
I did like the summer once upon a time, way back :)
But ghost white skin (odd for Italian descent), too many floaters in the eye and a FEW extra pounds make fall my favorite season :)
The crisp Autumn air makes me feel alive!!
In our neck of the woods, summer is indistinguishable from early spring. Cold here this year.
Love. your global warming comment, however.
Me too. Have hated summer all my life. I love the cool crisp weather of Autumn , great for a good nights sleep and the fall foliage is beautiful. The ambiance of light you mentioned is an actual phenomenon in nature in late September/early October as the Earth slowly begins shifting here in The Northern Hemisphere there is a soft light called “Autumnal Light’’. Painters, particularly those who are of the Impressionist school of art absolutely love it.
I live in Bricktown. Long Beach Island is nice.
The Wurst?
BBQ unlimited ....
WOW
I knew why I loved it but couldn’t quite put it into the right words.
I like up the “Autumnal Light” and it does sound quite beautiful.
Know NOTHING about art.
Well...one thing now.
Thanks :)
What exactly is there to like about frying in a cruel, brutal, unrelenting Sun in 90 degree weather?
Like I said, in my youth I don’t think i loved it but it just was. Now I hate it.
