FULL TITLE: "The baby space race: Moscow scientist vows to ensure the first child born in space is Russian - but admits she is struggling to find volunteers for the project"

Dr Irina Ogneva, lab head of cell biophysics of the Institute of Medical and Biological Problems of Russian Academy of Sciences, revealed the ambition this week.

'We have always been first in space, and would want the first human to be born in space to be a citizen of Russia,' she said.

But she admitted that so far Russian cosmonauts have refused to donate sperm obtained in space for scientific study.

Dr Ogneva did not make clear whether she expects the first space baby to be conceived as well as born in orbit.

'Most important is not the fact [for the baby] to be born, but [for the child] to be born healthy.

Wouldn’t surprise me if it’s already happened.

Just watched “The Space Between us” on Netflix. It was a scifi flick that dealt with a boy whose mother was an astronaut and just pregnant as she set off for a lifetime assignment to Mars. She died in child birth and the baby survived and spent the next 16 years growing up on Mars until he was able to get sent to earth........It was a good flick

You have it backwards. They are wanting babies born, we are working on killing them.

How would you get the baby back to Earth safely? The G-forces experienced on re-entry could potentially kill such a fragile creature.

In that case you would have the first born, and first aborted in the same flight.

It’s irresponsible to have babies in “space.” Humans are optimized for life on Earth, and not for free fall or life on another planet.

It’s forcing the newborn to live in an environment that is not normal for humans. The newborn is not given any choice.

But then, what do liberals care about newborns? What do they care about the rights of the individual? The collectivity is more important than the individual.

I suppose that the spacecraft would be Russian soil in a de jure sense.

The first child to die of radiation poisoning in space will also apparently be Russian.

How would this even work? First you have to get a pregnant woman into space, or put a nonpregnant woman into space and then get her pregnant. If you put a pregnant woman into space, she will have to safely be able to handle the rigors of launch while carrying a child. Then her medical condition, which has never been studied in orbit before, will have to be favorable to a live birth, the actual birth would have to take place in a surgically capable environment, don’t think that has ever been tried before, and that’s probably the easy part.

Once said space baby is born, the baby will have to be able to be cared for until such point when it can withstand the rigors of reentry. All of the medical equipment necessary for keeping a baby healthy would have to be positioned in orbit already, you can’t run to the store to get a different pacifier or rash cream. The relatively closed and bacteria free environment of a space station is also dangerous for a newborn, who needs healthy bacteria to be introduced into it’s system to develop a normal immune system. All the while, this small human, with a delicate immune system, is being hammered by solar radiation. Then, presumably, this tiny human with bones and blood vessels that have never known the pull of Earth’s gravity on the surface, much less the critters and diseases of Earth is going to get bundled up and somehow land safely on Earth and try to live in this now oppressively dense and filthy environment. That’s all assuming so many failed experiments and dead infants don’t happen first to kill all incentive to keep trying.

Some day it may not be stupid to try this as part of a extraplanetary colonization effort but that day is very far away.

That raises the question which nationality you are if you’re born in space. Maybe it depends on which country you’re flying over at the time.

Why not? The first married couple in space, doing what married couples do, were Russians.
