A friend driving home on New Years felt uncomfortable driving, so he pulled off the road to take a nap.

Cops wake him up, yes guilty DWI.
While sleeping off the road!

Because the keys were in the ignition!!!

Route 64 a couple of miles east of 59.

A friend of mine drove home pretty drunk one night, years ago, and hit his mailbox when he tried turning into the driveway. He left the truck there, and walked the hundred yards to the house. When he came down to get it in the morning, the cops were there. A long conversation ensued. His take was that it was his mailbox, so what’s the big deal?

I've had this happen to me twice. Once parked at a gas station, the other on the side of a residential road. Luckily, the first they only tried for a PI, the second unlawful carry. Apparently they didn't think they had a strong enough case for DUI (didn't have that much to drink either time [one a late night from work], neither was actually driving), and both cases ended up with a dismissal. BUT, you still have to deal with a night or two in jail, and months of court check-ins waiting for them to file your case. It's ridiculous. I've learnt my lesson: either sleep at a friend's house, or, if that's not an option, better to drive home than risk sleeping in the car!
