It was these. Later I was to find out ---> Pokeberries. They were growing like ------- weeds, of course. LOTS of "fruit" - need to cut it all off and put in the garbage - at the very least. Toxic to animals and humans from what I've read. They start off bright green and then go purple. Apparently infects a lot of bagged dirt, IIRC.

Pokeweed is toxic in sufficient quantities, but medicinal in smaller amounts. It’s good at clearing blockages in the lymphatic and endocrine systems, and thins down lymphatic fluid so it flows more easily. It also moderates the immune system, which helps with autoimmune disorders. I use the root in the herbal tinctures I take daily.
That said, it’s invasive enough that It’s best to stay on top of it!
